So, I used this official childhood BMI calculator from the CDC:

https://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/bmi/calculator.html

It says that her BMI is 19.4 and she is obese. The formula takes height into account, so I assume being tall isn’t the reason. She’s five, and is 45” and 56 lbs, for reference (wearing size 8 or 9 clothes).

I don’t want to be one of those people who refuses to acknowledge there’s a problem. On the other hand, I know BMI is an imperfect tool. My five year old doesn’t look “fat” in my opinion—she looks pretty normal. But she has a little bit of a tummy. I’ve seen kids who have obvious weight problems, and I wouldn’t put her in that category—but maybe I’ve had blinders on about her edging toward being overweight.

How do your kids measure up with this calculator? I’m torn between completely ignoring it and changing her diet (cutting down on the carbs and snacking to be more healthy). She’s starting Irish dance lessons next week, so maybe that will help, although she is already very active.
