DD is 5 and we want to get her started on an intstrument. I really want her to learn Cello but I am also open to violin. The instructor recommended a rental cello since she will grow out of the one that is her size now. But looking at the cost of a rental per year plus the insurance for it, it seems cheaper to just buy it.

How much of is the cost of the rental without insurance?
If she will outgrow it anyway, maybe just rent without insurance and take the risk that something happens to the instrument.

@ElbieKay: so the place we were referred to requires that you get the protection plan and I think I would want to have it since string instruments can be somewhat fragile. For the year the rental is $400 if you pay in full upfront or $40 a month and the insurance is $70 and for that price I could just buy one outright

I played cello as a child and with any instrument even as a beginning child quality matters, if the rental is a nicer cello than the one you would buy I would do that. Also, a used instrument might easier in someways. It takes stringed instruments a little while to settle and keeping a brand new one tuned can be a pain.

Agree with @maddyz: - quality matters a lot on strings. Rentals are often God awful quality but I'm sure not always. I would see how the rental quality is and decide after that.

So it turns out the cello price to buy is much more expensive because their prices online were confusing. for most places buying used is atleast $1000 so I am now definitely leaning more towards renting.
@maddyz: @yoursilverlining: you both make good points. Actually the rental is better quality than what we can afford to buy.
