We are traveling back east at Christmas and planning on buying an extra seat for our twins. Someone on my local twin mom group said the extra seat can be used to change a diaper. I haven't really thought about where we would change them but would assume we would use the bathrooms.
I would assume most of us would change a baby's diaper in the bathroom.

I personally would not change diapers anywhere but the washroom, out of respect for other travellers. The washrooms on the plane are tiny, but they all have change tables that flip down.
When travelling with DS, I've always gotten a briefing (by law), and the flight attendant will always mention that they have extra diapers and bags for solid waste. I usually make sure to bring my own though.

Bathroom.
That being said - we had a blow-out on the plane during landing and I had no choice. I did it as fast as humanly possible and apologized to all of my nearby seatmates.

I would use the bathroom. It's like inviting danger to change them in the seat. I'm sure it would be the one time they decide to pee while you were in the middle of a diaper change and I wouldn't want to deal with a wet seat. It might be more a hassle to use the bathroom but worth it. Also, you never know who's sitting around you. What if someone snapped a pic and posted it on social media saying "WTF" and it gets picked up.

@Astro Bee: is that in the US? Because we have flown with our lo a lot and never had this happen to us! I don't trust anyone to provide my necessities.
We took extra wipes, more diapers and clothes than we thought we would need. 2 changes of clothes per kid!! Also, take a second shirt and pants for you, if you can. Blowouts take out not just them but you, too sometimes...

I have done it, it's not my preference, but I have been in a situation where there was no changing table in the cabin bathroom.

I've flown with my LO a good bit, (probably 6-7 times in his 2 years of life), and I've done both. I always tried to go back to the bathroom to use the changing table, but once it was broken, and the flight attendant told me just to do it on the seat. The second time, he had a majoooor blowout, and I was by myself. The flight attendant stopped me, and said to come back to the back of the plane. She laid down a garbage bag on a seat in an empty row, and I changed him there. It would have been hard to do otherwise because it was everywhere. I was kind of embarrassed, but I wasn't going to argue with her, and it was easier for me! I did it really quickly, so hopefully nobody was bothered.
Every time I've come out of the bathroom after changing a poopy diaper, the flight attendants have always handed me a garbage bag, and then disposed of it for me.

Bathroom. ALWAYS bathroom unless extreme circumstances occur, such as those listed by @mediagirl: I've usually had friendly flight attendants tell me which bathrooms have the change table when they come around for the preflight check, otherwise, it is usually clearly marked.

@bluestriped bee: do planes have the little changing pad? I haven't flown with littles and never thought to look before then.
I would assume the opposite. but then I'm wondering what if you had a massive blowout? just hope everyone looks the other way?

In the bathroom for poop, in the seat for pee. Maybe it's just me but I typically change a pee-only diaper in like 30 seconds so it just isn't worth the trip to the bathroom, nor do I think it's long enough or stinky enough to even be noticeable by other passengers. Now, I probably wouldn't do it if we had a third person in the row with us, but we normally get a whole row to ourselves so that makes it easy.
My mom has a story about flying across the Atlantic with my sister when she was a baby, and the man in the seat next to her exclaimed at her "You better not change that baby here!" and she said "Um I just changed her a minute ago and you didn't even notice." That's pretty much how I feel about pee-only diapers.

My friend was flying by herself and the flight was so bumpy that no one was allowed out of their seat. Her son then had a major blowout. Thankfully her seat mate was understanding and just told her to change him in the seat and even helped her.

Every time I've flown with DD I've been on planes without change tables and done it on the seat. If there was a change table I'd probably use it.

@looch: DH flew for a smaller airline for a bit, and there was definitely not any changing tables in the bathroom! I've changed LO on my lap in the bathroom more than one time in the past. It's ridiculous.

I've always flown virgin America and jet blue with baby and they have changing tables in the restrooms. I always change diapers in the airplane restroom, good opportunity to also wash my hands. obviously an emergency blowout while the fasten seat belt sign is on would be an exception. Why not just use the restroom.

I've never seen a changing table in an airplane bathroom. Previously I never looked, so I could have just missed it, but we flew with LO in September and I checked- no table. There's nowhere else in those tiny bathrooms to change a baby, so I would have had to have done it in the seat. Thankfully we got away with changing her just before boarding and just after disembarking, so it wasn't an issue.

I flew twice recently when DD was just under and just over 3 months. One plane had a changing table in the bathroom but the other didn't. I put the changing pad on top of the closed seat to change her.

We haven't flown much with her but every time the bathroom has had a little change table so we used that. Also our flights have been short enough that we would only bother to change a poopy diaper, otherwise we change right before boarding and on landing (well we would. I think she has pooped on every single flight). We haven't bought her a seat yet and the flights have always been full, so no room in our row anyway.

Not every plane has a changing table in the bathroom. I've done bathroom, seat and floor (when we have had the bulkhead seats). Sometimes there is just no choice. Also, toddlers don't really fit on the bathroom changing table.

Ask when boarding to make sure there is a changing table AND which bathroom it is in. I have changed wet diapers in our seat, but poop always in the bathroom!

We have flown a lot with LO (20+ trips in 3 years) in planes of all sizes and never changed her in the seats. Baring an emergency, the idea really rubs me the wrong way. We've always been fine changing diapers just before boarding or in the bathroom mid-flight.

Always in the bathroom. I never even thought about using the seat actually, but more because in over 10 flights we've always had people right next to us and he is prone to blow-outs on take-off. So many close calls with leaking and mess in the bathroom, I wouldn't know where to look if poo hit the fan in the seats!! Now that he's a toddler, I wouldn't trust him to stay still. Plus I mostly have travelled solo with him, and I prefer to do the mad wrangling in the privacy of the tiny bathrooms, haha.

The bathroom. I was on a flight across the Atlantic once when someone in the next row changed an older baby's poopy diaper. I swear the smell lingered for hours.
On our last trip the changing table was in the bathroom at the front of the plane. We were at the back. It was hard to get a chance to use the bathroom since you can't line up in the front. Other than that it wasn't bad.
