Another vote for cot top changer! We used ours until we ditched the cot!

@Mrs.KMM: yeah, my kid LOVED to pee and sometimes poop mid change. Cool air hitting her privates, I figured. But it never got on the dresser, just the pad and cover which we changed and wiped.

My friend's son did projectile poop- like 5 feet, no joke. But she just cleaned everything. Yes it was gross, but it's not like she just left the poop on the furniture.

@Foodnerd81: My nephew did that once and my sister had to clean every single louvre of her closet doors. But in that case...no furniture in the room would be safe!

@MaryM: exactly- nothing is really safe when a baby is around!

We used a dresser too and poop/pee never got past the changing pad cover! We put one of those dog wee wee pads on so anything rarely even got on the changing pad cover and nothing has ever flew anywhere else!

@MaryM: I've never heard of blowouts going all over the room. Blowouts are simply when the poop escapes the diaper (while it is being worn) and gets on clothes and maybe whatever baby is laying on/sitting in. It isn't shooting all over anything (at least in my experience). And if it did, I'd clean it up immediately.

@Foodnerd81: Yeah - despite her liking to pee/poop mid-change, none has ever gotten on furniture. And if it did, I'd just clean it up. No big deal.

We just put a changing pad on top of a dresser and it worked fine. Especially because once they turn 6 months, they DO NOT WANT TO BE ON A CHANGING TABLE and it turns into alligator wrestling. What I'm trying to say is, you're going to eventually haul that changing pad to the floor or your bed to keep the baby from rolling onto the floor (even with the buckled strap) that a changing table's life is short.

We use the Keekaroo Peanut on a dresser -- love it!

We do a change pad on the dresser. Never had an issue with pee getting on the dresser without my knowledge, and I wiped up right away ... my son was more likely to "fire hose" the wall next to the dresser than anything! I changed my son on the dresser until he potty trained at 2 years 3 months. I have no patience for getting on the floor, and they have to lay on the change table to be changed at daycare, so he knew he had to lay there and accept being changed.

We use a dresser with a changing pad on top. We didn't even a fix it to the dresser. Any errant poop and pee has ended up on the pad, not the dresser itself.

Never had poop or pee on the dresser. So much more functional and reusable than an actual changing table.

We have a changing table, but only because my husband refinished his old dresser for LO's room and it is almost five feet tall!

Dresser with a Keekaroo peanut on top. I've had to wipe that down often and occasionally wash in the shower but nothing has ever gotten on the dresser.

I used the dresser with a pad on top. I didn't want to spend extra on a changing table when I knew the dresser would work just fine.

We just used a dresser and put a liner between the pad and dresser.

We have a changing table and a tall dresser. I prefer it and my son's bedrooms (3 in 19 months) have all been big enough to comfortably fit the furniture. I like my changing table set up but if you prefer the dresser option I wouldn't worry too much about messes. They do happen but my son has never pooped during a change and only peed a handful times. The worst mess has been vomit.

We bought a dresser (we didn't have a spare) that came with a removable changing table (wood) topper. It's worked out great so far!

I used a change table. Having something the right height for me was important, and I liked that it had a curved pad and safety bars on the side to help keep her from rolling off. I also liked changing her from the front of the table and with a dresser I would have to change her from the side.

@raspberries: I've always wondered about those changing tables that sit atop a crib. Do you keep it on there all the time? Has baby ever hit their head on the bottom of the change while in the crib? Where do you keep your changing supplies? How do you access them when you have the baby on the changer?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Here's the logistics as we have it figured out so far: we're planning to keep it on there all the time as a newborn, and if it gets to the point down the road where he's ever bumping his head, we have enough clearance under the crib to slide it underneath. We used the crib for one of my friends who was staying with us with a 10 mo old, and he just stood up in the section of the crib that didn't have the changing table on it, so I'm hoping it's not an issue. Our changing supplies are in a basket under the crib as well - we pull it out, put the supply basket on the glider next to the crib (they're easily within reach of each other), then buckle the baby onto the changing table and voila! The good news is that since the changing table is over the crib itself, we can just use the crib to hold the baby while moving baskets/the changer itself so he's never left unattended.

@raspberries: you aren't going to put that baby in the crib when there a poop explosion! You might want to keep the cleaning supplies a little closer during the day.

    pear / 1955 posts

@Dandelion: Hahahaha! Assuming the poop explosion happens in the crib, it'll already be dirty - if it happens outside the crib and we're coming into the room to change, I'm assuming I'll just hold onto the little guy (since my clothes/his blanket will already be beyond help) while I pull the supplies out (which can luckily be done with one hand!)

My MIL thought it was very strange that I wanted to use a dresser as a changing table. I actually ended up getting a changing table with drawers so it is like a small dresser with a changing table top. It has been perfect. It has also gotten banged up a lot, so I get your mom's point somewhat.

We will be using a dresser that was mine when I was a child, with a changing pad on top (I really want to get a Keekaroo or a Cooshee). When I asked my mom about it, turns out that the dresser was my changing table when I was a baby, too! My parents apparently built a little removable rail all around the top, but I'm hoping a contoured changing pad will be sufficient.

I voted Monkies because I think either option is great. Our dresser was lower and I preferred the height of the changing table, plus I liked the storage it provided and the dresser itself went into the closet, so it would not have been convenient. However, I don't see how you could only drill into the back? I think they make some non-skid type options but you would have to drill into both sides or else the changing table pad could move around. Also, I've never had an issue with pee or poop getting off the table. In fact I wish I got one of these instead of the traditional ones, because I'm sick of washing the cover after 20 months. I need to measure and see if this will fit and might just buy it because WIPEABLEEEEEE IS KING. I hate laundry. And #2 due in 7.5 weeks.
