This has been on my mind too. Thanks for starting this thread. I agree, it's so upsetting this is the world we're living in. There is so, so, so much hate. It scares me.

@Littlebit7: My heart goes out to your family in Charlottesville.

I wish Trump condemned the acts but I'm also not surprised. This is what I expect from Trump. Threats of nuclear war via Twitter and white supremacists re-tweeting Trump's statement as a condoning their actions.

Is America great again yet?

Charlottesville is the latest example of just how significant the Civil Rights movement was. Discrimination and racial violence became illegal, but hearts and minds did not evolve. Coming to grips that your country is just as messed up as the rest of the world is absolutely frightening.

I'm horrified by what happened in Charlottesville, but I'm not at all surprised by Trump's pathetic statements. Of course he's not going to call out white supremacists, neo-Nazis, or the KKK. They are part of his base! And given his low approval ratings, he needs them. So sad!

Someone posted a photo of a shirt seen at the rally that said something along the lines of "Obama called me a clinger. Hillary called me deplorable. Trump calls me American." You need no more proof than that to know that these people feel emboldened by Trump. I'm absolutely horrified that he didn't condone or even acknowledge the fact that these people were changing NAZI slogans. And then only when there was a huge backlash by his own party, did the White House (NOT the president) walk back that statement to "of course include..." Trump doesn't care. He doesn't. I picture him sitting in his gilded room in his golf club, pumping his fist, and going "YES! Make America Great Again!" Ugh, I'm so disgusted.

@catlady: They're probably looking for a fight by coming to Boston. It garners more attention at a national level.

As far as I'm concerned these people are the scum of the earth.

@Littlebit7: you're right, a lot of cities and people have a lot more they need to do to address their histories. Not just southern cities, Philadelphia firebombed a black neighborhood just in the 1980s. I haven't found Richmond to be more racist than Charlottesville, though less affluent.

Unfortunately the focus is on Charlottesville right now. They decided to let the new HBO show Confederate film there and barely decried the first KKK rally that was held there earlier in the summer. In a small city there's thousands of members of white supremacist groups and the organizer of the rally is from Charlottesville.

I get it, most people mean well, but nows the time to confront that implicit racism that's built into a lot of cities because of their recent pasts.
