Is there a trick I don't know to checking for teeth coming in? Especially the first bottom ones? Because I swear after 3 months of my on and off checking (and no teeth), this guy is really good at pushing his tongue out, turning away, etc. And I thought I saw two teeth coming in, but maybe they're just ridges. And the lighting is never good enough.

Just stick your fingers in and feel. If there's anything sharp, congratulations!!

I have always had a hard time with that. Agree with sticking your fingers in there to feel for sharp spots. Also getting him laughing can help because you can look in better (or sadder but still effective, when he's crying you can often get a better look).
With c I was sure she was teething for months, then suddenly with no warning, she bit down on my finger and there was a little tooth!

I just wait until she's screaming upset, then have a peek in her mouth. That way her tongue is out of the way.

I try to stick my fingers in and feel. However things have gotten intense in there and he will clamp his mouth down so hard there's no way I can get my finger inside. I assume once they pop through he will relax about letting me feel around? And I guess I will figure it out when I go to nurse him the first time. I don't know - teething makes me feel like an idiot. I have sworn for ever that it's happening and we have zero teeth so far.

@twodoghouse: you're not an idiot, they can show signs of teething months before they pop through. If all else fails blame it on teething. My 3 year old just had 2 of his 2nd year molars pop through. We blame his recent night waking on that. But literally we have been saying for years "oh he must be getting teeth and nothing was ever there!" These kids don't come with a manual
