...way to check your credit score?

Yep! By law the three main credit bureau must provide you with a credit report once a year: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action
I spread mine out and get one every 3-4 months.
Don't know if you have Discover card , but company has started to provide free FICO score with statement

@derevival: I'm not positive, but I don't think Annual Credit Report gives you a score, does it? But it does have all the credit information laid out, which is awesome!

I use creditkarma.com. It's such a great website! You can get your credit score at ANY time, check the balances on all your loans, see when dings from past hard inquiries are expiring, etc. I think it's a great way to make sure nothing fishy is going on. I HIGHLY recommend it!

@Sparkler: I'll have to check that out. I'm a little too obsessed with checking my credit reports. Haha

@citymouse: I don't know of any free credit score without having you pay for something first. The only one I do know of is Discovercard. They give it to you free on your statement every month.

@derevival: You should! It is amazing to me all the information they provide, for free! There are a lot of ads on the site, but I think it's worth it for a free site that provides a tremendous amount of information in an easy to use format.

I agree with @Sparkler: 's suggestion on creditkarma. It's not "THE" score, but gives you a pretty good idea where it's about.

@Alivoo01: That is a good point. I think the algorithm that the 3 main credit reporting agencies each use to determine their score is proprietary, so creditkarma uses their own formulation. Before I got a mortgage, my credit karma "score" was right in the same ballpark with the numbers the 3 credit reporting agencies provided.

Are you checking for a reason? Or just curious? Before we bought our house we wanted to know my husband's scores, so we just paid for it. Most of the "free" stuff seemed shady or you had to sign up for some kind of monthly program and cancel. It's only $20 on myfico.com and you get reports and scores (with all kinds of helpful info) from all three bureaus.

I use credit karma too; I've checked it against my real credit score and it's pretty close.

I thought the free reports don't show the credit score? I could be wrong though on that.

@Sparkler: Purely curious bc I haven't seen mine since we refinanced our house a couple yrs ago.

@citymouse: I just checked out credit karma too. Very interesting and easy. I don't know much about credit scores at all so it was interesting to see what they based the score on.
One of the main reasons I have a lower score is pretty much because of my age, since I couldn't have any accounts until I was 18 and I'm only 24, it marked be as a "C" in that area. I also got a "C" for not having ENOUGH credit cards. That just seems so silly to me!
