I worry about this because we live on a busy-for-our-neighborhood street and our door opens directly onto the front yard. We do have a deadbolt and are really careful to always use it. But when we were visiting my parents, DD figured out how to open their door, which doesn't have a deadbolt. They live in a rural area so it's less danger from traffic but I was nervous because she could get lost and it was really cold out. And now I know she can and will open doors so it doesn't put my mind at ease... We are installing an alarm system for unrelated reasons, but I'm really glad it includes a door chime because then at least there's some sort of alert if she manages to get our door open.

We installed a hotel lock/chain lock whatever you want to call it, at the very top of the door. I keep it locked while we are inside, just in case, because he knows how to open the door as well.

Luckily, our door handle is really high up, so it's not easy to access for smaller children. I use the deadbolt though when I want to be extra sure.

We have a dead bolt high up.

There was a really sad story here last winter of a three year old that opened his grandparents front door while visiting and wandered into the neighborhood. He didn't make it.

I've been hyper vigilant about it since.

@Foodnerd81: you can buy a door chime. It's like a mini part of a security system. I think they sell it on amazon. Basically chimes when the magnets aren't aligned

Do you have a lock on the inside of your door you can lock with a key? That's what we have - our door locks automatically from the outside when shut, but inside you can still open it unless you put the key in the lock and turn it.

Our not yet 2 year old can open the front door so we are super vigilant about keeping the key in the lock and turning it. She can't turn the key yet so it works for now, but our plan is to install a deadbolt high up before too long. Our entry hall is also easily shut off - one door goes to the lounge, one at the end of the hall goes to the kitchen, and then the staircase to upstairs. We keep the lounge door closed, and the kitchen can be accessed from the lounge (not just the entry hallway), so we keep that bit gated off, and then DD has run of the ground floor except for the kitchen area and entry hall, but we don't need to worry about her getting out the door. We also have a gate at the top of the stairs for a similar reason.

It is so scary to think about them getting out, I seriously have nightmares about it sometimes!

We just installed a high latch. One on the front door and one on the back door.

DD is not mobile yet but we have a deadbolt that is always locked and we also have an alarm system that will chime if any exterior door or window is opened.

Maybe this up high? I prefer this over chains; these are super easy to just flip close
