My DD is 6 months. We aren't doing true CIO (will let her cry up to 5 min to see if she settles herself before tending to her). I am trying to night wean though. Basically, if I suspect she isn't really hungry, I try to calm her back. So last night our routine was 7 pm- bedtime including nursing and story time. Put down drowsy but awake, sang a prayer, and left the room. 9:30 pm dreamfed. 1 am she woke up hysterical so I only let her cry 2 min before going to her. I didn't think she was really hungry after 4 hours so I walked around bouncing her until she was very calm. Put her down awake, sang a prayer, and left the room. Then she slept until. 5:45 am and woke up happy and giggling. So there was a MOTN wakeup but not a feeding anytime between 10 pm and 6 am.

When we did CIO, we added a dream feed. He would go down at 7pm. Then around 10-11pm, I would go in there and do a dream feed. The dream feed pushed his sleep out longer until 5-6am. I discontinued a few months later when we weaned him.

@jedeve: I didn't stop night feedings, but my LO was waking up 6-8 times a night, so I used Ferber method CIO to eliminate the non-feeding wakeups. And to push the first feeding back to where it had been previously,

So I picked 1 am and decided not to pick her up before that point, but would pick her up to sooth/and feed if she woke up after 1. And then again for 5 am.

Pre-sleep training, she would go to bed at 8 pm and wakeup at 9:45, 11, 12, 1:30, etc.....all night long.

After sleep training, we had a glorious short period of her waking up only after 1 am and after 6 am (we're both up for work at that point anyway, so that was only 1 wakeup in our night time).

But now LO has bronchiolitis so all bets are off. We still only feed her 1 time at night though. But she wakes up more often, poor thing.

We CIO at 5.5 months and it took a week. First night after crying for an hour and finally putting himself to sleep, he woke up once but found his thumb after a few minutes, then I nursed him the next time he woke up 2am and again at 6am and he got up at 8am for the day. The check-ins just made him more hysterical so we moved on to extinction by night 3. The crying got less and less and so did the wake ups as the week went by, by night 7 he was sleeping 9-6. Anytime he woke up he put himself back to sleep. I continued the 6am feed until we bottle weaned at a year.

Being able to sleep on his own and night weaning are two different things, my LO just happens to naturally wean himself. Guess he likes sleeping better than eating. He was also a big baby so he didn't actually need the night feeds, so mileage varies depending on baby on this regard. Good luck mama!
