LO is 21 months old and we only use BG Elementals at this point (we've used a number of others over time based on what we needed then). I think we have around 20 diapers. It all depends on your child's bathroom habits and age. We have all colors, but I really like having several white ones to wear under lighter clothes. The next child will wear whatever I put on his/her butt - girly or not. It's just going to get pooped on.

I have a lot...prob over 45 for both kids. My favorites are BG Elementals. LO 2 can't wear 4.0s (her skin gets irritated) and Freetimes fit weird on her. I also like Thirsties AIOs for LO 1.

@Weagle: How often do you have to do laundry with that many? Do you remember how often you were doing it when your LO was younger?

@spaniellove: I do laundry on Wednesdays and Saturdays. She's in disposables on Sundays for church nursery ease of use. She also is not a heavy wetter and only poops once a day or every other day. When she was younger I was washing every other day, but we were also using a mixture of Elementals, prefolds, and fitteds, so we had a lot more diapers in rotation then.

@lauraeabel: We us BG pockets (4.0) and AIOs (Freestyle) and I like both, but if I had to do it all over again I would just get 4.0s b/c they dry more quickly and don't have crevices for poop to get into. Which really doesn't matter once they have solid poop, but for babies who are just eating a little solid food, it can be a pain. We have 18 diapers in rotation and I wash every 3 days or so. I put a disposable on DD at night though so her butt stays dry- helps w/rashes. I pulled another 10 diapers out of rotation to save for our next kid b/c 18 is more than enough for us right now. I don't ever pay attention to color when I grab a diaper for her, but the girly colors are really fun! I don't think I would mind only having gender neutral colors though.

I have BG 4.0's, I love them! I used prefolds plus covers for #1 and they were a lot more work and difficult to manage with a squirmy toddler! I also used BG Elemental for a trial period and while I liked the idea of natural fibers, they took longer to dry, the BF poop got everywhere and the wetness of the cotton gave my LO a rash.

I have 18 of the 4.0's for 2 kids,, 12 for the baby (he wears a disposable overnight) and 6 for my toddler. I could probably use a couple more for the baby but now my toddler is potty training so I will have more than enough once he is done. I would definitely stay gender neutral for future babies unless you don't mind pink on a boy.

It sounds like you can find some good used deals in your area but you might also want to check out the cotton babies website, I purchased mine as seconds and they were much cheaper than new and I never noticed any difference.

I have freetimes and love them. For me it's worth it to not have to stuff them. I've recently started using flips because the inserts are easier to wash then the freetimes, daycare and DH like the AIO better. Watching cl is a great idea. I just got a great deal today on more flips for our stash. We have every color, LO has no idea and he's just gonna poop in them ;). Oh and we have 33 diapers and wash twice a week
