I would like to use CD but pretty sure it's a no-go for DH. Wondering if I can legitimately use the cost-savings advantage as a rationale (in addition to environmentally friendly and less chemicals in contact with LO). Would love to hear about your CD and money-saving experiences! Also, were you able to use the same CD with LO #2?

You know what I spend the most on? Wipes! I would definitely save by doing cloth wipes. I want to do cloth... I know it would save overall and if there really are less blowouts... pick me!

We're using a diaper service right now and it's not much, if at all, cheaper. But my DH was 100% against washing at home. I don't know how long we'll keep this up, though, because prefolds are kind of a PITA and DH usually puts her in our "backup" disposables anyway, so now we're spending our weekly service fee plus buying disposables too.
Friends who use AIOs/pockets and wash at home have told me it's marginally cheaper for baby #1 but the big savings come with baby #2.

I bought all my (BG Freetime) AIO's on sale and I have already passed my "break even" point and she's only nine months old.
I think it can ABSOLUTELY be cheaper, if it's done correctly.

We pay for laundry. Even considering that I have a complete stash of gifted cloth diapers, disposables are cheaper. Also our province composts them so the Eco cost isn't quite as bad.

@NorCalWayfarer: also wanted to add my husband wasn thrilled at first but really loves them now. Maybe you could try one and see what he thinks? We will definitely be using the same diapers for future kids- and then maybe still reselling the flats. They're in great shape.

Definitely cheaper especially if you use them for 2 LO's as I did. I bought Bum Genius 4.0's as "seconds" from the Cotton Babies website, they are great and I haven't noticed any difference from the new ones except I saved almost $5/diaper! I made my own cloth wipes and have 4 wet bags (2 large for the diaper pail and 2 medium size for on the go). If you keep your system simple and look for deals you really don't have to spend very much at all.
Also, the BG are very user friendly, my husband isn't thrilled with using cloth after 3 years (I do all the washing, stuffing etc.) but he will do it and agrees that they are easy to use.

To do a true analysis, you'd have to also add in your costs of washing, drying and detergent, wet bags, pails, diaper sprayers, etc.
I do think they are by far cheaper than disposables, and if you keep them clean, you can for sure reuse them for other children. Heck, some people even sell their used diaper stashes, so you never know!

I think absolutely yes! Our whole stash of AIO diapers + wet bags, pail, cloth wipes etc was maybe $700? We calculated we'd spend that on disposables in about 10 months. Soooo yes.

Everyone says so, and I'm sure they are if you don't go crazy and especially reuse on a second LO, but just keep in mind that most comparisons out there are done by cloth advocates who tend to inflate the cost of disposables! No one I know goes through the number of disposables or pays as much for them as those comparisons seem to indicate.

Yeah, way cheaper for us. I just calculated diapers as either way I'd have to buy wipes (we do cloth wipes so save a bundle there too!), sprays, a diaper pail, etc. we broke even at 6 months and we used BG 4.0s, a couple elementals and the flip system.
Another real savings for me is that she has NEVER had a blowout in cloth. Some leaks here and there due to user error (she's 1 year on Saturday!) but my other friends in disposables have blowouts regularly so much that their kids have pooped on them. That's never happened, so I feel like I save on laundry for LO and myself that way too!

I'm by no means an expert but i've been cloth diapering my 3 month old for the last month. We use bumgenius freetimes i purchased most of the diapers at Buy buy baby using $5 off coupons, or cotton babies 2nd sales
we have:
32 diapers and we've spent between $12-18/diaper ($480)
1 pail from Ikea ($5),
2 liners ($33),
1 daycare wet bag ($25)
diaper bag wet bag ($15).
Sprayer ($45)
Homemade cloth wipes (1 1/2 yards cotton jersey - $7)
Bac out (32oz - $13)
Homemade Wipe solution (water, baby wash, coconut oil, tea tree oil) ($20 to buy all those ingredients new)
Tide Powder ($10)I wash half our diapers every 3rd day and line dry. i havent noticed a jump in our water usage/bill.
Prior to making the switch to cloth diapers we were buying 2-3 packs of 50 count diapers a week at target ($6.50 each) So i figure we were spending the equivalent of 1 cloth diaper a week so buy the time she's 1 year we should be even with what we've spent. I purchased the diapers throughout my pregnancy maybe one every week or two (instead of my usual starbucks lattes) and then used gift cards to purchase the rest of what i needed before the baby came. We didnt start using the Freetimes until week 10 because i felt like they didnt fit her properly until then- shes a peanut and only weighed about 10lbs

They have absolutely been cheaper for us. We have a stash of 28 BumGenius 4.0s, cloth wipes that I made, 2 small wet bags (one was hand me down), one large wet bag, and we wash with Tide powder. Considering over half our diaper stash was gifted to us at our shower, we broke even a long time ago.
And no blowouts, EVER. Heck yes.

Yes! We will break even in 3 months and we by no means did this the cheapest way possible
