DS was just shy 9 lbs at birth, so skipped the NB sizes. Now at 3 months, (tomorrow!) he's around 90%-ile for weight and completely filling out his 6 month clothes...so I'm finding it kind of hard to plan for the winter. 
If you had a similarly big baby, how did they progress through clothing sizes? We're there any clothing brands that worked particularly well for you?

it's crazy, I feel your pain! I found h&m to fit really nicely although I am still sizing up. But for example, my baby is 10m but can fit into 12-18m, while at old navy, I can't even find pants that fit. I think the body type matters more than size. I have found certain styles that fit him best. No more onesies

DS was 9.8lbs at birth and has continued to stay big. He is 99%+ for height and 90% for weight. He just turned 8 months today and he is in nothing smaller than 12-18, most if what he wears is 18-24 and 2T. I have just been buying larger than what actual fits because he grows out if it so quick. I stopped buying onsies, 2 pieces are just easier to me. I find that carters runs the smallest. BG also runs small but not as bad. I think Gymboree is the largest I have found.
ETA I wanted to add that carters does have an amazing return policy. When DS was 3 months I think, I bought a bunch of stuff from carters during a sale because I needed bigger stuff than what I had. I bought 9, and 12 months sizes. Washed everything when it arrived and then realized most if it just barely fit. And they took everything back, no problem.

T is on the bigger long side and at 4 months was in some 9 month onesies. He's 6 months now and I think he's slowed down a bit because he still wears a lot of 9 month onesies! He's finally chunking up a little, too. And soon he'll be crawling so that'll help! They don't stay huge forever

They've always just stayed a size or two ahead. I never buy too far in advance because who knows what size will fit next season.

My wee dude leaned out from 3-6 months (95% down to 75%) so he usually fits true to size for most clothing.

The good thing is that you can always find clothing cheaply in the US. There's always some sale going on!
I made several mistakes early on and the main one was buying too much ahead. I wasn't able to predict what size my son would be in a year so a lot of stuff that I had bought didn't fit when the season was right for it. So I learned to just buy what I need and keep it really simple. One or two special outfits and the rest was stuff that I purchased as I needed it.

I agree with others - don't buy until you need it, or buy winter gear at least a size up. My DS is 6 months and very tall, he has been in 12 month sleepers for a few weeks. He outgrows sleepers first, then pants, then onesies. Carters runs long and skinny, Old Navy runs wider. I even found that the Just One Year Carters line at Target runs smaller than the regular Carters. I think the growth slows down a little from 6 months on.

@junebugsmama: I think I will try to get more H&M stuff...but I think I'm going to have to measure first. DS is proportional...but definitely not a bean pole.
@pinkb: Wow! That's a big kid! Good to know about Carter's return policy and Gymboree's sizing. What.is BG?

Lo was 9 pounds and we have flown through clothing. Now at 8 months we are in 18-24 and 2T at the gap, old navy and h and m. I have a few 12-18 month onesies from h and m that still fit. I have also pretty much given up on one piece anything, carters and sleep wear.
Pants are hard because we cloth diaper and he's a bit of a chunk (also tall). I like the way zultano fits but they are pricey, gap is also good most of the time. I find pants at h and m often too narrow.

I don't know! I'm a second time mom, but my older kiddo was such a tiny thing, and my littlest is such a chunk. Today I posted a photo on FB of my youngest (4 months) in the same outfit (size 12m) as my older one was at 1.5. I'm not able to re-use as much as I'd like to because by the time my oldest was in 12 month clothes, he was in a pants and t-shirt place, and my youngest most definitely still needs onesies and such. I'm trying to make the old stuff work, though. It seems such a waste to buy him new stuff!

I'm wondering the same. LO was 7lbs at birth but now at 4.5 months he's almost 20lbs and wearing 9 months. Hoping it slows down. I'm tired of changing out clothes.

My son was average until 4 months and then grew really fast until he hit 1 (he was at the top of the charts for height and weight at 1). Depending on the garment, I started buying 2 sizes up and would just roll pant legs and sleeves so that I would be sure to get a lot of wear out of things. Since my son was pretty chunky, he filled out the clothes even though they were too long, so he wasn't really swimming in them. His growth slowed down a lot after 1 though. He grew 12 inches his first year and only about 3 the 2nd year.

@FliegepilzHut: i think when he's fitting the size perfectly you're safe to get the next size. I just wouldn't go hog wild buying winter clothes for next year. My oldest has a ton of gorgeous summer dresses in 6-9 months that she put grew in March when she was two months old. It's really the seasonal stuff that I avoid buying. Socks, tee shirts, jeans, sleepers, etc. are all fairly seasonless so you can use them whenever.

My boys were like this. Basically they fit in a size for about 2-3 months. At 6 months they were in 12 months. At 9 months in 18 months. By 1, they were in 2T. I don't buy ahead for the next year. Once they fit in a size well, I started buying the next size up. Now at 18 months and 3, they fit in a size for a season.
Eta: they were more chunky than long. So yes pants fit long. I just rolled the leg or got things that had a band at the bottom

@oliviaoblivia: agreed. There will always be sales and I swear, the stuff gets cuter and cuter every year!
@FliegepilzHut: you can put an order in on Carters, say today, and have it by the end of the week, worst case scenario. I haven't set foot in a store more than 3 times in my son's 5 years to get his clothes. I just place a big order a few times a year online and fill in with other stuff as needed.

My twins were born 6lbs each but are now 20lbs+ at 7 months. They're wearing 18 month clothes right now! I don't buy anything now until I need it and I don't buy a lot because they're growing so fast. I buy another size up in Old Navy. We use Carter's a lot and baby gap is slightly bigger than them.
My biggest concern is diapers! They're already almost too big for size 5 target diapers. With over a year to go, I'm worried there won't be diapers that fit them in the end. Does anyone know if bigger diapers exist??
