Another white girl question.
I put coconut oil in lo's hair at night after bath time (he's black). I have to change his crib sheet every other day because it leaves a mark on the sheet.
Am I using too much or is this going to happen? Is it even possible to keep black hair too moisturized?

@Mrs. Polish: It is possible to keep kinky hair too moisturized or oiled.
We use coconut oil in LO's hair and have never had any staining of our sheets. You may be adding too much at a time. And it's possible that he may not need it daily in his hair. You could try using less oil daily and/or oiling as needed (not necessarily daily).

We also use coconut oil each night, but do not have staining. As soon as I put it in, I comb it through and then pat the hair with a towel. That seems to leave the perfect amount of moisture in my LO's dry hair.
Our situation is weird because she has AA dry hair, kinky when wet but straight when dry... So the balance of moisture is really tricky for us.

@Mrs Jazz: @Mrs. Jacks: so how do I know if it's too dry? I feel so clueless about this. I think you said once Mrs. Jacks that white people often keep the hair too dry...I think I over compensated. I usually comb through his hair before I put the oil on, so should I switch to putting the oil on and then combing?

@Mrs. Polish: Yeah, I do what Mrs. Jacks does, put the oil in her damp hair, finger comb, and then comb through. If there's any excess I usually just dab it with a cotton t-shirt (we use old cotton t-shirts to dry our hair because regular towels cause more frizz & tangles).
My daughter's hair is different textures, the back of her head is kinkier than the rest of her hair, so I always check that part of her head daily to gauge how dry her hair is--it usually gets clumpy and more matted together.
You'll get the hang of it soon. When I went natural I had no idea how to take care of my hair, it was a trial & error learning process.

@Mrs. Polish: if it's brittle, breaking and snagging, I think of it as too dry. It really is trial and error. I shared about my daughter's hair because nobody knows what to do with her hair. It's really unique. We've been through a lot of products and regimens.
Now I use kinky curly shampoo, a generous amount of conditioner (kerastasse) towel her off (patting, not rubbing) and then the coconut oil and combing as I described above. I've also learned that I have to be flexible because as she matures, her hair and oil levels are changing.
It's tough!
