I just noticed this tonight on the corner of my 2.5 yr olds mouth. He hasn't complained, acting normal, no other spots that I've found. Cold sore or beginning of HFM? He's never had either. (Sorry about the up the nose shot!)

Looks like angular cheilitis to me. Could be due to moisture and it can be from an overgrowth of yeast.

@yellowbird: should he go to the pediatrician or dentist? I've never heard of it. Trying to figure out if he should stay out of daycare tomorrow!

@MommySLP: it's not contagious. If you can keep it dry and keep him from licking it it can self heal. Sometimes a little nystatin ointment is necessary if it doesn't go away.

My son's HFM didn't look like that when it started out, I'd also vote it's something else.

@MommySLP: I totally agree with @yellowbird. Looks like angular cheilitis. I had it with my last pregnancy and needed to do a little topical antifungal cream to kick it.
