i think there have been threads about this before but i can't remember!
DH made a list of baby names he liked for boys the other night while i was at work.
they are (mostly) awful. I don't want to list them here in case some people like them! but..oh, boy.
did you nicely tell your SO when you didn't agree on a name? pretend to move on to a new one? or outright ask them what they were thinking?

It's perfectly natural to not like the other person's name... I think the key is to jump in the fray and start suggesting names too!

LOL! I think this is very common. I told my husband when I hated his suggestions and he did the same to me. We had the hardest time with boy names but thankfully, we're having a girl!
It's so early, you have plenty of time to fight over names. 
Definitely go with Mr Bee's suggestion and tell him your ideas! We got a book and read through it together picking out ones we each liked/didn't like.

We had fights and fights and fights, too.
Finally we said.... no vetoing, just agreeing. So... each time we have a list, we have to say yes to at least one name.
At the end, we can kick names off the list. It's much more positive.
We actually have 4 names that we both almost like at first. PROGRESS!

@mrbee: @mediagirl: I totally have a list too. We were reading the book out loud a few days prior, which worked out SO much better than the lists! 
@pastemoo: love that! that makes the person who is being vetoed feel a little better, I think

ETA: We don't always both have a list. I find I am more willing to make a list than he is. It still works. He can veto names of jerks/people he knows and really doesn't want to accidentally name the kid after, but he cannot cross a name off the list that he doesn't like/ We have a chalkboard with names that got the "yes" vote. We've been through 1000s of names. We like 4, but haven't decided that it is definitely one of those 4.

I got lucky and we agreed. But if you don't like the names just tell him you don't love them. You have the right to love your babys name.

My husband and I have the hardest time agreeing on names! I really hope we have a boy first because we actually found a boys name we both like. Girls names, not so much.

@sorrycharlie: You have some time. Some parents can't decide until baby is delivered! Just... don't go along with a name you HATE. You can let some you don't like as much on the list, and then raise other names higher on the list.

We have a very hard time with this! Our baby didn't have a name until he was like a week old. The other day we were talking about names for next time and he told me, "reprogram your brain and think of NICE names, not horrible names." ouch! LOL

i told him to come up with a list of 5 boy names, and i had to pick one. i've got to come up with a list of 5 girl names, and he'll pick one. your hubby is picking nontraditional names, i'm assuming. my hubby wants to pick out COMMON names. so with our common last name, that would be TOO common!

We're lucky in that we've agreed on a boy's name (DH's father just passed away in November, so that was an easy name to choose). As far as a girl's name goes, we're totally stuck. But that's okay, lol....I'm not even pregnant yet.

We've been having this issue too. We've gone through a TON of names so far and only just recently stumbled upon the one that we might use. DH is afraid to commit to something. He seems to think he's just going to have some kind of epiphany and think of a name. :\
As of right now, she's going to be Charlotte June but who knows if we'll actually end up naming her that when it comes down to it.

SO and I just went through this this afternooon. We just decided on a boys name as he walked out the door to work. We ended up grabbing a baby name book and highlighted names we liked. We wrote them all down and then he would cross of 5 he disliked, then I would. Eventually we ended up with 3 names and both loved the 3rd. Crisis adverted. =P

me? well, I just kind of wrinkled my nose the first time he read them to me. then I pointed out some good ones he wrote down that I liked. funny enough, neither of us have put any thought into girls names, assuming we'll have a boy! this whole disagreement might be for naught

We would each make lists and then strike off each other's absolute non-negotiables. For example, I love the name Beatrice, but Mr. Jacks HATES it! We didn't even try it on for size... It was just gone. But names like Zenobia that he loved but I wasn't sure of... I kept trying on for size until we were sure that it isn't the name of our baby.
It's this way that we've gotten to our now fairly short list which contains names that the other suggested that we are both surprised we like.

@sorrycharlie: either way, at least you get your method down. we had so many almost fights about girl's names, but we're having a boy, still don't know the name, but it's 1/2 as many difficult talks.

bumping this! I was totally right at the argument was dumb - we're having a girl! but now we can't agree on any girl names. DH tends to latch onto a name and not like anything else as much.
--currently, he's big on Emma. He likes Mia (which I LOVE).
--He does not like any of my other top favorites, such as Caroline, Kathryn (Kate), Willa.
Any name suggestions I can throw out there later tonight?

@hunni: I like 'classic' I guess you could say - some of my top choices were Eleanor (vetoed), Willa (vetoed), Caroline (vetoed), Kathryn (Kate) (vetoed)..he is not a fan.
the only girl name he's ever volunteered is Addison, which I vetoed because my name is Alison - and just, no. lol. and he suggested Maya when we first started dating. So I guess you could say he likes Maya & Emma?

I love Clair and Lauren was my middle name but we're not going with either of those. I think all of them, including the ones you're thinking of are beautiful.

@mediagirl: aw, love those! Grace was another top pick but he vetoed because his aunt is named grace (a close aunt). he's a weirdo.
my cousin is named Lauren, but I'll definitely see what he thinks of Hannah, Olivia & Claire!
it's kind of crazy how often you can peruse the baby books and not really 'see' certain names until someone else mentions them!

@sorrycharlie: I know, I completely understand. One thing I used to do (that I can't do anymore or I'll drive myself bonkers since we already HAVE a name) is google a name one of us liked and type in "names like Kate" or "names like Emma." That might help!

Alyse and Allison. Hmmm doesn't sound as much of a tongue twister as Addison. Or Elise to mix it up a little bit. McKinsey, Olivia???? I have a feeling you both might like Olivia for some reason!

@sorrycharlie: Whoa!!!! Now, I *really* hope you both love it! Olivia combines your love for the classic, with his bit of different-ness. You like names like my hubby, and I like names like your hubby, and I know DH would like Olivia b/c he says Addison, Aiden, Noah (not noah i love noah), Emma or too out there. Which I do NOT agree with. Whereas I would strike Caroline, Catherine, or any other classic name super quickly. The key is I can't get my "out there" name (your DH can't), but he can't have his complete classic name (you). And now I have written a novella on something I know nothing about lol. Just a feeling!
