@mrbee: You've never had one? They grow in Italy so my dad would always have them. They are extra juicy and have a mushy consistency, but they are good.

@blushink: I probably have had it before, but I am no good at identifying fruits. Growing up, we just ate peeled apples and pears haha.

@mrbee: I thought that they were a really big "Asian" fruit-- we always had them on our ancestors' altars. Some varieties are squishy while others are hard (more apple-like, I guess? Even though not apple-like at all). They're really good!

@mrbee: Ah, same here! Which is why my mom planted a persimmion tree (and a gripload of other trees) after eating one fruit and saving its seeds. OR we would come home with a box of grapes since they were on sale and end up eating grapes for about 2 months straight.

Congrats! I love persimmons. Although, I found out the hard way, that there are two types of persimmons. One needs to be mushy to eat and the other can be firm to eat. My parents always bought the firm one. I bought a nice firm one and yuck, it was gross. I bought the wrong kind.
ETA: The ones shaped like a heart needs to be very squishy when you buy it. The ones I like are the ones that look like little pumpkins. They can be eaten when firm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persimmon

After my mom got a job, I mostly ate rice and kimchi (that we made ourselves). Plus tuna out of a can bought in bulk. And apples. Those were my major food groups for a decade or so.

@mrbee: It depends on when you pick it. If they are at all under ripe, they are incredibly weird and make your tongue tingle and are overall not so good.
If they are over ripe, they are mushy and overly sweet.
If they are just right, they are firm and juicy and taste kind of like... it's hard to explain. They have a slight papaya vibe, but very different. You just have to go and find a good one, which is almost impossible in the USA because they always seem to be under or over ripe in stores. Like pomegranates. If you've only had grocery store versions, you have no idea what they are like.
