uh oh! I didn't deal with constipation (and then the dreaded H word, yuck) until postpartum so I don't know if it's baby safe, but my doc had me on miralax and benefiber.

I tend not to drink enough water. For me guzzling a ton, helped with my constipation. Also try guzzling some prune juice too!

More water, fiber and stool softener.
I surprisingly have been more ... fluid.... since pregnancy. hehe.

@Clementine: Mmmmm guzzling prune juice.... (probably the only way to get the stuff down)!!

It's just awful isn't it? I've had this issue throughout most of my pregnancy, and it's making me really dread postpartum. Some of my tricks are drinking lots of water and eating a ton of dried fruit. When all else fails I take a colace, which my doctor told me is safe.

Once I had to start the iron pills, my doc suggested using colace for constipation. She wasn't kidding that the extra iron would firm stuff up in there. Just when I thought my digestional tract was back on track....

My doctor told me (I have suffered from it pretty bad during my pregnancy) that you can not overdose on stoll softners and they will not harm the baby. So I take Duralax twice a day and Miralax 1-2 times a day (depending on how long it has been.) This helps, I also cut out most dairy (take a calcium supplement) and drink more juice.

I struggled with this early on in my pregnancy, but now everything's moving!
What helped me:
-eating a high fiber cereal in the mornings (I love Frosted Mini Wheats!
-switching to Rainbow Prenatals, they have that lactoblabla (ha, I don't know the word) probiotic stuff that is gentle on your stomach and helps move things along.
-adding fiber to your foods (slowly and gradually). I use Benefiber, it's tasteless and dissolves easily and can be put into hot and cold drinks/food.
-drinking tons of water.
Hope that helps!

My OB told me to try Peri-Colase. (Colace?) Its sort of expensive, but it did work. She said to start with 1 pill a day and see how it helps. For me, I tried fiber/fruit/prunes/water/everything and the only thing that worked really well was the Peri-Colase.

@mediagirl:
You know what is super weird. Pre-pregnancy constipation was an issue for me. During, nope. I'm on iron pills twice a day and still no issue. Very weird!

I eat raisin bran crunch cereal atleast once a day, and I eat oatmeal atleast very other day. Oatmeal does wonders for constipation.

Can I just laugh....
This is what you read when you go to the threads.
CONSTIPATION BY BANANA. hahah... funny because bananas cause constipation.

Oh... why not talk to your doc. He can probably prescribe stool softening pills. (like the ones after you give birth)

I take these probiotics every morning

and also find eating eggs helps, as well as apples with the skin. But the probiotics have been so so helpful! Good luck!

@blushink: I didn't know bananas cause constipation!
I had problems in the first trimester, and the thing that worked for me was trying to eat an apple everyday, or applejuice.

Yeah, my pediatrician told me to feed my LO bananas when he had diarrhea (to solidify). Dang, I should change my user name from "banana" to "prunes".

Yogurt is also good for your digestion. Make sure the label says it has "live and active cultures"

I am surprised no one mentioned ground flax. I have had lifelong problems with constipation and I feel much better about using this than something like Colace, which has no effect on me any longer.
Another thing you can look for is Senna tea, but I am not sure if it is pregnancy safe.

If I find that I don't have a bowel movement during the day, I'll take a metameusil capsule in the evening. Also, my doctor suggested colasce capsules (just a stool softener and won't get things going, but will make your bowel movements easier).

I restarted taking a prenatal with iron because i showed as slightly anemic at my 28 week appt and since I've been soooo stopped up! It sucks
Is milk of magnesia ok? I should really slug some of that again....

I took OTC stool softener when I was pregnant once my midwife gave the okay. I think it was Dulcolax. I still take it, since that is one symptom that did not go away after birth, but I buy the generic version.
