Feeling so overwhelmed at the hit our bank acct is taking with the onset of childcare fees. We live very frugally and I'm not sure where we could really cut except maybe our cable bill. Just needed to voice my freak out.

After our first tuition payment I cried. Real tears of horror and sadness. I try not to think about it, but it sucks when I want to buy something and then I'm like "No! Tuition is due on Wednesday!"

Ugh! Child care is SOOOOOOOOO expensive! :(I wish we all had money trees. *sigh...

I feel the same way!! But I was a nanny so I realize we/I am paying for someone else's livelihood- child care is a career too! It keeps it in perspective

I kind of do a breath hitch when I realize a quarter of our take home pay per pay period goes directly to childcare until our advance payment application is processed. Gulp!

Ahhh it hurts me to look at what our budget will look like this fall after we start paying for childcare. It's arguable if its even worth it for me to work

We are extremely fortunate now, but it wasn't the case earlier. DS was born in NYC and the cost of daycare was beyond outrageous, so I became a SAHM/WAHM. It was just not worth it for me to go back.
Now where we live in Austria the daycare is heavily subsidized (hello high taxes!) and we pay the equivalent of about $200/month for half days with food included. When he starts full time in the fall it will be about $300/month. And it's Montessori AND bilingual!

I hear ya! It is depressing how much we spend on day care. Our mortgage on our condo is cheaper.
@matador84: I can't even think about 2 in day care.

Daycare is a huge factor in not having a second any time soon. It would be insane to have two in daycare.

Ugh, yes, daycare is sooooo expensive!! I think that's why a lot of people try to work from home or just stay at home! If their income isn't greater than the cost of child care, what's the point??
We're very fortunate to have found a great daycare that was actually reasonably priced in our area, but it's still a good chunk of change!

We've expanded our house hunting area to the suburbs because daycare is half of what it is in our current neighborhood. I am not looking forward to those payments.

@matador84: I know it prob won't make you feel much better, but around here that would be a deal for 1 in daycare!

I was mildly annoyed about the increase that went into effect a month ago, but my son's teachers move heaven and earth ona daily basis for him and they are still underpaid.
So i try not to think about the payments and give thanks my salary covers it and we still have savings and fun money.

We haven't started paying yet, but I'm trying to think about it short term! Childcare costs aren't forever. The cost is worth the reward so to speak and it's a blessing to have child(ren) that cause the expense! Two in childcare will hurt too (hopefully we have that "problem") but again, it doesn't last for long in the grand scheme of things!
For me even if we got to have two in childcare I want to be a working Mom, plus benefits, pension, etc are long term things I want to be "in" on over the dollars alone getting paid vs. Daycare costs short term!

It hurts us every month but we were lucky enough to find a place that is reasonable for our area. They are also into giving discounts if you pay early and for an extended period of time. We paid for 6 months in June and were given a 20% discount! It really made a huge difference. But yeah, I can't wait till she's 5 and goes to Kindergarten.

Our babysitter is VERY reasonable and I am so thankful we found her !! Honestly if we could just get rid of our student loan debt we would be set ! I know it won't be like this forever just have to take it a day at a time. It helps to know you ladies can commiserate !

Agh, we start paying on ours next month and my stomach is already in knots about it!

We are at $`1,600 a month for one in daycare. Two in daycare is going to be about $2,600 a month...

@mediagirl: I keep on telling DH what a "windfall" it will be when B is in kindergarten. That he can go get his dream car.

@littlek: hahaha! We'll be able to start saving for her college education!!!

@mediagirl: @littlek: lol, LO is just starting in September and I'm already counting down until kindergarten! Hellooo new car!
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@Bookworm: One of my neighbors calls their LO starting kindergarten, "winning the lottery." But kindergarten in our area is half day, so we won't really "win the lottery" till 1st grade.

Uh, yeah the daycares in my area start at $2,700/month! And there are long waiting lists for those, most are well over $3K. I think that is absolutely insane. And the government does nothing to subsidize the cost, just keeps taxing us at the usual 40% rate since we're both working. Makes me want to quit my job and collect disability!
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@Modern Daisy: where are you? it might be cheaper for you to get a nanny or a nanny share.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
@littlek: I'm in NYC and that is exactly what we're doing, lol! Still not affordable, but definitley the better option.
watermelon / 14467 posts
The daycare we chose is around $766 per month. That's like having a second mortgage payment and it's nearly 3/4 of one of my paychecks. Sometimes I wonder if it's even worth it for me to continue to work. My husband says I can quit when he gets a promotion, so I guess I'll suck it up until then, but when/if we have a second I will definitely have to stay home.
nectarine / 2667 posts
@littlek: our area is 1/2 day for free, but full day if you pay tuition. The kindergarten tuition is WAY cheaper than private daycare. But, then again, we could keep him at our daycare (they have a private kindergarten), skip public school K, and go straight to first.
It seems like daycare generally ends up being the amount of a 2nd mortgage for whatever area you live in! As F gets older, his tuition is less. I'm already starting a savings fund to get us through the year or two that we'll have 2 in daycare (which will be 3 or so years from now!)

Ugh, seriously... I really want another baby, but how do I find room for more daycare $$? I feel bad even complaining because ours is decently priced and we have a *wonderful* daycare lady, but dang, we could have a second house for what we're paying!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
Hehe... never understood why people say having kids is expensive until Wagon Jr. started daycare at 18 months. Then I was like "ohhhh". When LMW starts in October I'm gonna be like "AHHHHHHHH"
grapefruit / 4671 posts
Gah, we pay a nanny right now but in October/November will start paying 2,400 for daycare. I am so irritated by the whole thing. No additional kids until DD is in pre-K.
