I know there are quite a few of us on the board struggling with food allergies and intolerances for our LOs. Here is an interesting breakdown of the costs of having a food allergic child.

I believe it! My sister has celiac so I try to accommodate her when she's in town. Buying food she can eat is expensive because I can't just buy the brand that's on sale, I have to buy the GF kind. The flour, pasta, etc is all really pricey compared to the regular stuff.

On one hand, I'd say we don't buy any special "nut-free", "___-free" foods. But there are definitely other costs. Before I understood what was going on with me, I lost a lot of work time to being sick from my food allergies. Now I just find it a lot easier to be home and cook every last thing from scratch. I don't know how I could put a dollar value on the inconvenience of not being able to get food to eat when I'm out and hungry.

@spaniellove: It is definitely easier. You are an adult, my friend's daughter is allergic to milk and peanuts. She has been congested lately and the doctor says it is allergies which means she is getting milk somewhere. How do you keep a 2 year old safe from it? It is most likely she is getting it from daycare. Mom can't stay at home and keep her away from milk. I can totally see the costs.
My son's milk for MSPI is $5 for 8 ounces and he drinks 1 a day (if his doctor had a choice he would have more a day). Formula was double the regular cost $30 a can.
