Would you consider a futon? I actually find IKEA futons to be really comfortable!

@Mrs. Pen: i also hate futons. we have an ikea karlstad sofa though and it's pretty comfy!

We have a $300 sofa store in our city. DH got one in college and we used it for 5 years. It was actually great. If you can find something similar, it's a good deal.

I was also going to suggest Big Lots! SIL has a set from there and it has held up well.

Are you also comfortable buying a couch off of Craigslist? I really dislike buying cheap furniture, only to throw it away after a couple of years. I've had some good luck with craigslist in the past.

Do you have a Cost Plus World Market? We've gotten some of our furniture there. Good prices and pretty decent quality and style.

IKEA Kivik!! We got it bc reviews said it's a good napping couch...hehe and it is! It's similar to Karlstad but wider I think. We have two of these in our house...two different shades of gray!

The ikea ektorp is pretty cheap for a couch that will last. Not the prettiest but it's comfy and lasts!

I'm going to use floor cushions like this to "build" the seats: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/chinois+aqua+khadi+tufted+floor+cushion.do?&from=Searchand then add some coordinating bolsters/throw pillows.

I am pretty sure that even if I splurge on a couple of fancier throw pillows, it won't top $600 total, and it will last longer than a few years (in addition, if a pillow or cushion gets saggy or dirty, it's no big deal to replace it).

CRAIGSLIST! Seriously, search and search, get a quality name brand sofa for much less.

Otherwise, imo, you have to spend a grand for a decent couch.

@Mrs. Pen: I had the IKEA ektorp for many years and it held up great and was pretty comfortable. It's also super light weight so a breeze to move around if needed.

Have you seen these? I've heard awesome things about them (this brand is also sold in CB+, I think). It's also a futon!

our karlstad-- seat back is not high though, so no neck support unless I slouch. We got ours basically new off Craigslist.

I have the Ikea Karlstad, and it's held up great after three years.

Our last couch was from Craiglist. $200 and it did the trick for about 3 years.

Our current couch is from Ashley Furniture. Definitely not under $500 but it was under $1000 and for the quality I feel like it was very reasonably priced. You might be able to find sales there.

@Madison43: Agreed. We have had this couch since 2012 in white . We have bad two yorkies this whole time. The cover is easy to launder, and it's just now starting to show its wear. And this is with heavy everyday use including me spending a good bit of 5 months or so on bedrest while pregnant. It became my "office" chair lol. Ours has the chaise with it. Super comfy!
