Give me your list of how you attack a cough in your older child. And how long do you let the cough go before a visit to the doctor?
We are on about day 10 of a cough that's not improving with our 5 year old. Dr Google says its post nasal drip and possibly an upper respiratory infection. 
I just want us both to get a solid night of rest.

I give my son Hyland's when the cough is accompanied by a cold (runny nose). It seems to do something, even though I am convinced it shouldn't.
I take my son to the doctor when a cough is anything more than 3 days...he had pre-asthmatic symptoms as a young toddler and I am kind of anxious about it, so I want a professional opinion right away. Nebulizing with albuterol usally helps.

Other than humidifier, I have never found a cough solution for me or my kids. When I was pregnant I had bronchitis that lasted for close to a month

Albuterol is the one thing we haven't tried!! She hasn't used it in over two years at this point. Oddly her only symptom is this miserable cough. No nasal discharge or fever.

Same as @travellingbee: a humidifier seems to help at night but other than that we do nothing. Unless your LO is having trouble breathing my Ped wont treat a cough - last year my DD had a cough for about 6 weeks!

At five she can have mucinex. My ENT highly recommends just the plain guaifenesin.

@travellingbee: oh, I can try that. We tried it once before at the doctors recommendation. I blocked it out as it led to vomitting. She didn't like the taste.

@MamaG: any thoughts on trying an EO?
I have used one on my face and loved it so I was thinking about trying something like this for the kids

Mucinex for our older LO has worked well, especially to alleviate coughing at night so he can sleep. I also do baby Vicks on the chest and feet (with socks) and Olbas decongestant drops on the sheets to help open him up.

@Mamaof2: I'm very intrigued by EO but have not tried them at all in our home/family. Would you diffuse it in their room? Or would you apply it to the skin?

Our doctor says Benadryl is ok to use - it dries up the post nasal drip. We also elevate the mattress, use a dehumidifier, apply Vicks to bottom of feet then cover with socks. Sometimes a spoonful of honey before bed will help, at least to coat his throat.
