DS (15 months) has a cold - runny nose and cough. What cough/cold remedies do you like that I can grab at the drug store?
Thanks in advance!

For cough we either did a spoon of honey or there's a natural honey cough syrup called Zarbees. (Only after he was a year old, of course). It seemed to help!
Also, humidifier and baby Vicks on his chest and back.

At 15 mos I think you are still pretty limited...
Saline spray, Nose Freida, vicks....I think thats all I used at that age...

@SweetiePie: Good idea, I need distilled water for the humidifier and some vicks. I was wondering about zarabees
@Mrs D: Yeah, his last illness was under a year so I couldn't do much at all, but it ended up being an ear infection. He's so congested that I can't get much out of his nose, poor guy.

@macintosh: Our pediatrician does not recommend honey (and therefore Zarbees) until 2...I started using it at 2 and its amazing...
Have you inclined his mattress? That always helped with congestion in our house.
Also - I let the humidifier run for 30 minutes with the door closed before putting mine in the room - so its nice and wet in there! I also swear by vicks on the feet...

We have used zarbees and liked it. We also use a humidifier with the Vicks inserts and Vicks on the chest. Saline spray and we have an electric snot sucker. Also warm honey water to drink.

@Mrs D: @macintosh: I think this varies doctor to Doctor. Go ahead and ask your ped if you are concerned, but at 1 year my ped said it was fine and I shouldn't restrict his diet in anyway (and she specifically said honey).
I think it's like anything with kids, varying comfort levels!

Honey. D is 3.5 and asks for honey now when he's sick because he knows it helps him cough less and sleep better.

@pinkb: electric snot sucker? please elaborate...
@SweetiePie: agreed...as a first time mom I was a total rule follower...no way I'll wait til 2 to use Zarbees on #2...I love the nightime one with melatonin...

@SweetiePie: Yes...I think its just called nightime. It gives just a little "nudge" to get them past any little coughs and to bed...

Also there is a Zarbees for babies that is without honey. I think it's agave

@T.H.O.U.: @Mrs D: @macintosh: all this talk made me curious so I looked at the one we have. We have cough+mucous relief (with honey) and it says not for under a year old, but after 1 year is fine.

@Mrs D: we have this one. When DD was little she never minded it same with DS but when she hit 2-2.5 she started to hates it. But it works wonders!

When we have bad congestion, I steam up the bathroom before bathtime and let him sit in there for awhile, and then suck out his nose with the NoseFrieda. I also use the Vicks Plug-Ins and now that he's over a year old, I do a spoonful of honey to help with any sore throat. When he had a cough, I also did the baby Zarbees.
