Nope. I have needed more medical intervention with both births. I wouldn't chance it. I give other ladies mad props who can!!

My sister in law had a home birth and hemorrhaged, but somehow the midwives managed it at her house? I'm not sure how it all went down.
I might consider it, I'm not sure. I do love midwives though, and had a midwife for my son. I was going to a birth center, and the hospital was less than a mile down the road.

I am seriously considering it for my next. I had a fast and uncomplicated first and we live a couple of blocks from b the hospital. Our ambulance response time is under two minutes. The midwife I would use is very experienced, skilled and cautious. I think this combination of factors (assuming my next pregnancy is low risk again) is an ideal candidate for a home birth. I completely understand it not being the right choice for everyone but I am really glad IIIcan at least consider it

It's not for me. Plus even if I wanted to, having a licensed obstetrician or midwife attend a home delivery is illegal in my state. This alone would make me VERY uncomfortable.

I would totally have a home birth if it were legal in my state. Under current legislation, I wouldn't be able to get a CNM to attend, which is why we're going to a freestanding birth center instead.

Not an option for me, but even if it were, I think I would be too worried about the risks.

I totally support home birth but I'm not sure that I'd be a good candidate for it myself based on my birth history.

We live a mile from the hospital and I'd never ever consider it. Precious minutes wasted getting there. Plus, I NEED all the epidurals!!!

I would have loved to have a home birth. Currently, it's illegal in my state for midwives to attend home births, so I birthed at a hospital with a CNM.

Not for me. I like drugs. My best friend had one- I know during the pre birth visit with the midwife they put meds in the fridge in the event of a hemorrhage.

never. To much can go wrong for Mom and baby. Why risk it?

No, too many complications last time, we both came out injured but okay. Wouldn't want to tempt fate.

after my history of quick and uncomplicated labors, i would love to have one to not have to worry about getting to the hospital on time and deal with the drive and the check in process, but because my kiddos have been coombs positive, they've been jaundiced and needed to be under the bili lights, so i would HATE to have a positive home birth experience and then have to check my kiddo into the hospital after for care.

No. I had a fast hemorrhage with Evan. I lost a lot of blood very fast...a midwife at home might have been able to handle it, but it's not a risk I would be willing to take now (especially since I would not be a candidate for a home birth with this one--known placental problems and a higher risk of a repeat hemorrhage). And even if I somehow was able to, D would put his foot down--he said he still sometimes has nightmares about how fast I lost so much blood.
My SIL just had her 6th baby at home, though, and she thought it was amazing. For some people, just not for me.

Totally could have but, made three attempts so far, but it hasn't worked out for one reason or another. Most recently was because my midwife couldn't get a second attendant on the day baby decided to come would have been a great home birth if she had!

Given I'm likely to be preterm every time, hell no. But I wouldn't anyway. A- I made the mistake of reading too much on the Hurt By Homebirth website. B- I know a LOT of people (me included!) who would likely not have survived being born had their mothers planned a homebirth. My cousin had such a severe abruption that they said had she not already been at the hospital for unrelated reasons, her son would have died. I know there are risks with a hospital birth as well, and I don't know the stats on which is truly safer, but for me I just would be too terrified.

I gave birth in a hospital attended by midwives. I am sure the same team could have handled it at home, but hindsight is 20 /20 and there was no way I would have been willing to take the gamble.
And I realize, a generation ago, lots of people were born at home, both my parents were!

I love modern medicine too much!! But obviously if I had to, I would.

No. I'm 10 minutes from the hospital but in a true emergency that is too far. I wouldn't want to risk it. Also, I liked my epidural!
grapefruit / 4355 posts
Nope. Things can go really badly way too quickly for both mama and/or baby even in what appears to be a low risk, "normal" delivery. No way would I be willing to risk losing precious seconds to receive care by not being in a hospital.

I considered one, but it would have cost $5-8k and insurance covered a hospital birth 100%. I didn't feel strongly enough about it to make that financial choice.
grapefruit / 4545 posts
No - its just not for me. I like being in the comfort of a facility that can handle any emergency. At my hospital - there is only one L&D room that can convert to an OR as needed. The night I delivered K I was the only laboring mama in there so they put me in that room - I take comfort in knowing I was there if I needed it - or anything.
Plus - morphine and epidurals are my friends...cant imagine labor without them!

No, it's not for me. No judgement against people who go that route through!
pineapple / 12793 posts
Nope. Knowing what I know about my first delivery and how we both would have died without intervention even though I had an easy low risk pregnancy..... No way ever.
pomelo / 5509 posts
As someone who is currently in the process of becoming a CNM...no, I personally wouldn't, especially because in my state it's illegal for a CNM or OB to attend a home birth and I wouldn't feel as comfortable with my other options, and transferring would be a complicated nightmare. Chances are everything would be absolutely fine but I just can't take the risk.
cantaloupe / 6634 posts
Nope, not for me. Didn't Jill also have a complicated home birth (I think she had an emergency C section?)
pomelo / 5093 posts
I'd probably home birth if I had a third. My second was a fairly quick waterbirth, so I'd hope for a similar experience.
persimmon / 1322 posts
I would, and before having my first thought that I might go that route for my second baby. However, after having my daughter I don't think I would risk it. Her cord was around her neck, and the midwife was able to slide it off, but I worry about what would have happened otherwise. I also needed pitocin afterwards for excessive bleeding and had crazy high blood pressure spikes the whole time we were there.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
Never. I like hospitals and medical doctors and drugs. In hindsight, I would never had been able to deliver my son at home vaginally. He was way too big. But I liked all those things from the start!
papaya / 10343 posts
If my first birth had gone well/natural and I had a midwife I REALLY TRUSTED I think I could. But only because I live literally less than a mile from the hospital. So I'd feel like if things started turning sideways we could get an ambulance here exceedingly fast. But I had a c-section first so yea. No. Hospitals for me.
