Do you think you could homeschool your kids, or do you plan on it? If you plan on it, what made you decide to go that route?
Unless I had to for some reason I don't think I'd want to, mostly for the fact that I don't think I know how to teach very well. We know someone who is homeschooled but she does it all online and her parents go to work and she just does it herself (she's 15) so I guess if that were the case, I could handle it. I don't think it would be for us, in general though.

I could if I had to, but I don't want to. I think going to school is really important for the majority of kiddos. I know lots of families make it work for a variety of reasons, but the upsides don't outweigh the downsides to me.

I don't know if I would have the patience or skill set to teach my kids everything they need to know. I'm great at playing with my kids, but when it comes to teaching, I would rather leave that to the professionals.

I could but don't really want to. If we can't figure out a decent option for next year then I guess I will but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

No. I don't have the patience or knowledge for it. I'm definitely not smarter than a third grader.

I guess I could while they were young, but I see too many benefits to public education (which is quite good in my state).

I guess I could if I had to, but I would never ever choose to. My son started school this year and loves it! I don't think I could provide everything he gets from school if I was teaching him on my own.

The plan is to homeschool so I sure hope so! I do understand how much training teachers have, but I think sometimes parents undersell themselves too. You've taught your kid for 4 years already. Anyway, we'll see how it goes when we get there and I will definitely be doing my research and not just winging it.

Being home schooled myself was a huge part of our decision. But I also see it is a great way for my son to get the education he needs and still be a allowed to be a kid and play. Our school district isn't great either.

I have several friends who homeschool and I've asked them how they are able to do it (especially the ones with school aged kids + a toddler and a newborn) - everyone tells me they didn't think they be good at it, but they're actually doing pretty well. There's a lot of very guided curriculum and co-op groups to help, too.
We are looking into homeschooling and some days I feel like I'd be great, other days I feel like I'd be a total failure. But my husband was homeschooled through high school, so I think I could do it if we had a good community.

No way. I lack patience, and I have high expectations from LO when I'm in teacher mode. I would only consider home school if public school did not work out and private school is financially ruled out. Even then, I would try everything possible before homeschooling. Just not the right fit for me.

I dont think i would. I think the social part of school is something my so already loves at preschool. Plus i dont have any education or training in early education. I wouls prefer my boys are learning from someone who does. Plus i thibk my oldest learns better when its not his parents teaching him. I do hate though how long the school day is for little kids so the thought of less structure in that regard with homeschooling sounds nice!

I possibly could if I have to. I have friends that homeschool so I've gotten a glimpse into the homeschooling world and it's not as scary as I thought! But I never even really gave it much thought since I work full time, and we paid a premium to live in the town we do for the school district!

@regberadaisy: Yes, there's a law that requires all school aged children to go to school. This is to make sure that all children get access to education/schooling.

I have degrees in early childhood & elementary education and have been teaching pre-k to 2nd grade for almost 10 years, so I'm confident I could meet my kids' academic needs if we homeschooled. However, we can't do without my income and I don't think I would enjoy homeschooling, so it's not a path we're going to take.
I do believe that professionals are the objective "best" people to teach, but some school systems are so broken that I can see how homeschooling could be the preferred option. I do worry about children who may have learning difficulties, though. Most kids learn new ideas, even complex things like reading, quite easily when given good exposure, but most parents are equipped to give the interventions needed for children who struggle. Although I've never seen the curriculums available, so maybe they address that?

I consider it. I want to do what is best for her, so if that was what seemed to be best at the time, I think I would do it. We live in a city with tons of resources and outdoor learning opportunities, so I think it is conducive to it. I think about going back to school (grad school) when all the kids are in school, so we have to see what is working best for all of us when we get up to it. I already have ideas for things I would have her learn and research/ study. I would only do it up to middle or high school, however, because there are science and math things that she needs, and I would prefer someone with a PhD in those fields teaching her those. We shall see.
I felt really held back in school and like it was a huge waste of time, even in HS, but the schools here are better than those I had to suffer. I remember from an early age thinking that school was just where parents stuck kids cuz they didn't want to deal with them, or didn't know what to do with them, or had to work (my little kid perception). Anyway, not that that is always the case but I hope to find her a situation where she isn't getting that perception.

@Pumuckl: we have laws about it as well, homeschool kids have to be registered and documented (you have to prove/ document hours, etc.)

@brownepiano: that's a big part of it for me. I don't really think little kids should be so... controlled. Sitting at desks doing worksheets, etc. We have the rest of our lives to do things we don't want to do! (That is at least my perception of school.)

I don't think I have the patience. I'm sure I could in terms of knowledge and finding the right resources and plans. I am very unsure that I could in terms of patience and energy. Plus i see a lot of benefits to regular school.

No, I don't think I would be a very good teacher and to me, the socialization factor that comes with going to school is just as important as the academics.

@Foodnerd81: Yes I am. I can definitely see benefits of homeschooling for some children and I think that with new technologies like online learning/testing etc. that it could be a good thing and maybe policies will change here. But I also see the benefit of making sure that no child can be left behind by their parents etc. just because they don't want you to go to school. So basically there is a right for each child to be generally educated.

It's very common in the religious/farming/somewhat rural community where I live. So there are shares/co ops/lots of support. I am qualified enough, I have considered it but it's unlikely I would actually do it.

Never! Educational achievement is incredibly important to me so I would not take it on - it is best left to educational professionals. That said, it is a good option in broken school districts, provided the one doing the homeschooling has some training or knowledge. Except for extenuating circumstances it would not be for me.

I work in education and have considered homeschooling just for kindergarten. But it could be she is socially ready for something more structured by that point, so we will see!

I have zero training in education, so no I could not. I mean, with a tremendous amount of work I possibly could, but I would consider it the equivalent of starting a brand new career. Not something I'm inclined to take on.

I feel relatively confident that my background in education would serve the academic needs of my children. However, I have zero motivation or desire to homeschool; not the lifestyle or experience I want for myself or my kids.

I would kind of love to for the younger grades, especially if we could join a co-op, but, as a teacher, I know how important being in a classroom can be for kids. I just worry about all the pressure and sitting at desks. She's not at all religiously based and focuses on the arts. Her photos and descriptions make their days look so fun.

I am a teacher (though in higher education) and have a strong interest in child development so I probably COULD homeschool, BUT I definitely wouldn't want to--I think there are very real, tangible benefits for learning in a school environment that I wouldn't be able to provide on my own. Also, that would preclude me from pursuing my own career goals
