Every time I visit my parents in the Philippines, I'm reminded how central air conditioning is to modern life! I am still adjusting to the heat and humidity here, especially since we are spending a lot of time outdoors with the kids. Plus there's no power half the day.
Could you live without air conditioning?

I don't know if we could survive our summers in the south without it. 8 months out of the year, it's 100+ (with the heat index)
.... I'm sure I wouldn't die, but it would make life extremely difficult

Sure could, I did for 20 or so years at my parents house. I like it warm and would even sleep under a down comforter when it was in the 90s. I have central air now though and definitely love it too.

No!!!! Our air conditioning unit was broken for 2 weeks this summer and it was miserable. It stays over 100 during the summer months here and it was just unbearable to be in our house. Every evening we’d leave the house once we both got home from work and go to my parents’ house or out because we couldn’t handle being there in the heat without AC. We wouldn’t come home until it was dark and things had cooled down a little.

I wouldn't die.... But I would be miserable. I've never lived anywhere without central air so im pretty spoiled.

@MamaMoose: I'm pretty sure I would die! Lol! And we only get 2 or 3 months of super hot (high 80's to low 100's) here in my little slice of Canada.

I have never lived anywhere with air conditioning in my life! But where we live it doesn't get too hot.
I would have liked AC this summer though. Our house has beenawake 80 to 87 degrees inside for two months!

I've never lived in a house with central air. Growing up, my parents had one swamp cooler for the whole house (ugh), and right now we have a removable window unit for DD's room. Otherwise, we've never had an air conditioner.

We didn't get AC at my mom's until I was in high school, so I know that I can live without it...but I would never want to again

@mrbee: When we rented an apt in Park Slope for a week there was no air downstairs, only in the master bedroom and playroom. Not even in the kid's bedroom!
I think it depends where you live, but here in Florida, no I could never live without air. Nor could I live without it in NY, we were miserable!

I did, growing up, and it was brutal. I will never be without central air again. If I were living on an island....now that might be another story.

I live in the bay area and NO ONE has A/C. Growing up in Florida I'm used to always having it but I really don't miss it except maybe 2 weeks out of the year here

During the day, yes. I enjoy being warm. My car doesn't have AC and my DH hates it during the summers here in Texas. He keeps trying to convience me to fix it...but I think its a waste of money.
But Night is a different story. I can't breathe if its too warm. I need cool air circulating over my face.

No way!!! I would die. I actually have a picture of the statue of John Gorrie, the father of air conditioning, in the Capitol building. I took it in 8th grade because I was like "this is my hero". There's no way I'd survive in Florida without it.

No way. I'm still trying to adjust to the fact that we don't have central air here. We have two ac units (one upstairs, one downstairs). Downstairs is fine, but it gets so hot upstairs! I've never lived without central air before! =/

I grew up in Hawaii and we had no AC at all. It was fine there because you get nice trade winds. It would not be pleasant without AC living in NY though.

the only place i have lived with A/C is my parents house (and maybe my college dorm). although it can be hot as heck, i've always lived somewhat close to the beach in older apartments where fans suffice.

@Mrs. Jacks: Of the weather or of the no air conditioning? Is this your first year in Utah? Oh I would much rather have the very hott summers than the winters. Seriously at my cabin we get like 6 feet of snow during big storms. I HATE SNOW!

While I was growing up my dad hardly ever turned it on to save $$.
I'm fine without it, I can cope - but DH is a major wimp and whines and whines and cries until I let him turn it on. Ugh. Makes me so mad when we get our electric bill in the summer!

@anonysquire: not my first year here, but record heat this year. Remember I came from Seattle, so I'm melting! I much prefer the winters here! The snow is why we moved here!

@Mrs. Jacks: Oh man Seattle. I visited there once in Janurary, it was so much colder than here and there was no snow, I was shocked! I'm just not a winter sports kind of girl. Do you guys ski or anything? I go snow shoeing a lot but that's about it.

I didn't have AC growing up, but I have for all of my adult life. We just took a trip and the vacation house we (as a group) rented didn't have AC, I survived but Sawyer was MISERABLE and wouldn't sleep. Considering how he acted during our trip, I would die if something happened to our AC.
