I have a strong suspicion that my dd will walk before crawling. How common is this?

Probably common because LO is the same way! She has no interest being on her tummy or moving her arms and legs to get anywhere but she'll stand with support for a long time. Realistically, I'm thinking our LOs will crawl for a short time before learning to walk...Or, do a bum-slide like in the Huggies commercial (do you know what I'm talking about?)

I heard on a documentary that lots of babys walk before crawling.
I think my LO will crawl... she looks like she's swimming when she's on her tummy because she's moving around so much.

i lot of babies scoot around and then go straight to walking without ever crawling.

I heard that its common, but its still important to encourage tummy time and crawling. A physical therapist we saw said she sees many older kids that don't have the fine muscles developed and have to go through therapy later on. Things like using scissors etc.

I am wondering about this, too -- he has always liked to be "standing." But he gets plenty of time to scoot around and try to crawl. He's still on the cusp of it ...

I read that it's really important that LOs crawl. Doesn't have to be on their hands and knees (my LO usually army crawls all over the place). It has something to do with development of the brain, depth perception, motor skills. I would encourage tummy time!

@Thehistoryofus: I've heard the same about crawling, that it's a very important developmental milestone. The cross lateral use of your body helps with specific motor functions and even brain development. A lot of babies skip crawling and are fine, but some do develop problems. We knew a family who had to go to physical therapy at a later age to treat some neurological problems that stemmed from the lack of crawling as a baby. The treatment is for him to crawl.

My LO always wants to practice walking so I was starting to wonder, and we gave her plenty of tummy time. At 7 months she learned to get her butt in the air and motor around while crawling so now she loves crawling everywhere. A lot of kids I've heard about though walk first.

My niece went from sitting to standing to walking. She's three and when tries to crawl now she still can't do it and what she does attempt looks very awkward. she was evaluated by early intervention because of her speech but her fine motor skills was marked very high.
Both of my kids have been crawlers my first didnt walk til 17 months which is really late but she just very causious by nature. She was walking holding things since she was 1 but just wouldn't let go.

@BoogieBea: Yea I agree. I don't think its such a big deal if the child walks before they crawl, but there are fine motor skills developed through crawling and lots of time on the floor should be encouraged.

I don't think it's actually that uncommon. My husband was one of the babies that walked before crawling, but I guess I crawled first. Our LO takes after me and he's a crawler, and it just now starting to work on pulling himself up to walk.
