LO is a rolling machine and is hitting her head on the bars in her crib lately. We have a breathable bumper on it now, but that doesnt seem to cushion her head. I know bumpers are a no-no, but are they okay after 6 months when the risk of sids goes down?

I put bumpers on LO's crib when she started rolling/ getting her limbs caught between the bars. I think it's more of a personal preference whether or not you are comfortable putting them on.

I had crib bumpers in H's crib from month 4 (when he was moved into the crib) until month 13. Never had any problems.

I've heard for the most part that the risk of LO getting hurt with rolling/getting caught in bar/etc. is infinitely less than the risk of using bumpers (strangulation hazard) and not necessarily just for SIDS risk.
I put them on for a night last week, then researched on HB and decided to take them off.

We used thin, but padded, bumpers from the time we swaddle weaned until about 8 months when she started using them to climb.

I plan to use them when I transition LO to her crib (she is 8.5 months now), because she rolls a ton and flings her arms and legs about in the process. I will take them off when/if she starts to pull up on them, like @Weagle.

We had bumpers on Cs crib until 9 months, when she started pulling up. I was afraid she'd use them to climb on.

@mrsjyw: yikes! i didn't even think about a strangulation hazard, ugh, just 1 more thing to worry about! lol
hmmm so it seems it's varied. she's bumping her poor head a lot lately
shes a rolling machine, so I may get some thin padded ones until she doesn't think rolling is the coolest thing in the world and needing to do it constantly.

I think it's all about whether you're ok with it. They're never really deemed safe or recommended (I think.) But I use them at 8 months. (Have for a few months, we tried without but there were so many more night wakings and pacis falling out of the crib!) We will have to take them off when she starts to pull up so she doesn't climb on them and fall out of her crib.
