We have a mini crib! It's loaned to us from our friends who used it from the get go until their daughter was almost 2. That being said... Our transition to it from Basinette basically failed. He used to sleep ok in it for first nap of the day but eventually even that went to crap. He coslept for night time and I nursed and snuck away for all naps until
This week when we started using a floor bed! Working ok so far! But yes... Those damn crib mattresses are so firm and I know it's intentional but for me the odds were stacked against it working since I kept nursing or rocking to sleep. No drowsy but awake worked around here!

No experience yet because baby isn't due for another month, but we just go the Sealy soybean organic mattress and we really like it. We had previously be given a hand-me-down mattress that was too small for our crib (there was a 1.5 in gap at the side and over 2 in in the corners) and we were also gifted a mattress that we ended up returning because we didn't think it was firm enough and it was heavy spring and not organic. So this is actually our third mattress and it it noticeably better. It's lightweight, firm, well fitting and organic. We love it. We'll see what baby thinks!

Still waiting on baby but we went with this one. http://www.fawnandforest.com/lullaby-earth-super-lightweight-crib-mattress-2-stage.html
It's very lightweight and I liked that it was dual firmness, seamless and organic!

I bought a cheap one and totally wish I have something nicer! We bedshare still at 8 mo so I feel like she will never like her crib b/c our mattress is obviously so much nicer.

I think we have this one, or something really similar: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=58653016&cp=&parentPage=search
I wouldn't worry about hardness. I thought it would be a concern, but DS sleeps in the PnP when we travel and has no issue with that mattress. And those are HARD.

We had a hard time transitioning from the rock and play to the crib at 4-6 months but i think that had more to do with the angle. She sleeps great now and at almost 2 "loves" her crib.

We got the Sealy Soybean Everedge. Been perfectly content with it. D has been sleeping in his crib since 5 days old with no issues. Slept through the night at 5 weeks. He's 2.5 and it's still in perfect condition. http://www.toysrus.com/buy/crib-toddler-mattresses/sealy-soybean-everedge-crib/toddler-mattress-em712-phn1-38930976
