My LO is 15 weeks and I've been successful with transitioning him from my bed to his nursery in a swing (swinging) next to his crib for all sleep. Has anyone had success in transitioning their LO from a swing to their crib? Troublesome tots has great advice, but I'm wondering how hard it is going to be. I hate for him to be in the swing for a long time because I worry it will be a hard habit to break, although I would like to avoid sleep training. Initially I was planning on sleep training with Ferber at four months, but since he has been doing so well in his swing, I want to wait. It is all so confusing!

If it were me, I wouldn't even think about transitioning until after the 4 month sleep regression. My little guy never used the swing for night sleep, but we did move from swing to crib for naps. It was kind of painless, and I think it was around 7 months?

My LO slept in his swing until about 8ish weeks before we tried transitioning him into the crib. We put him down in the crib; after his first wakeup, if he cried when we tried the crib, he went back into the swing. Over the next few weeks we kept trying the crib after each wakeup (and reverting to swing as needed), and by 12 weeks he was totally in his crib at night.
As for naps...well, that didn't totally transition until 6 months
But hey, he took great naps!

@jess1483 so scared of the 4 month sleep regression, but I can't imagine his sleep being much worse than it was when we were bed sharing. @tanjowen great! I was kind of thinking the same- he is pretty sleepy after eating during the night and I could try and put him in his crib at that time. I'm scared, though!
Yeah, naps are tough! I'm not too worried about naps just yet.

I did the troublesome tots thing. It was really really slow, but it was working. Then at Christmas (LO was almost 4 mo old), my mom dared me to put her down in the playpen. The kid went to sleep. And since I knew she could do it, I never went back to the swing. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't be so scared to see if she would sleep in the crib. Worst case scenario it's one failed nap. It wouldn't have ruined her sleep for life. I could have given her 10 min to see what would happen and if it didn't work, just go back to the original method. But I was so terrified to have her not sleep, that I never tried.

@ctownmacaron: I get being scared! Those few hours of sleep at night are precious. I just tried to approach it as if it didn't work in the crib, then the swing worked fine. Eventually they get used to the idea - and especially for us after 4 months and learning to roll over, our LO wanted to sleep on his stomach, so it worked very nicely at night!

If the swing works, stick with the swing, is what I say. The swing worked for us until the 4 month regression (which we hit at about 3.5 months) & then she was DONE with it. We had no choice but to do the crib cold turkey then. She was still swaddled so I didn't want to sleep train if she couldn't suck her hands to self soothe, so I just nursed her to sleep and very carefully transferred her to her crib... and rocked her back to sleep every hour all night long
It sucked but she gradually got used to being in her crib, and then after about a month of bad night & day sleep, we did swaddle wean & sleep train.

My LO slept in the swing full time until shortly before 4 months. I was itchy to get him in the crib, but scared to pull the trigger because he slept SO WELL in the swing. Looking back, I wish I had just let it go, because the transition was fairly easy and I feel like it was actually no big deal for him to sleep in the swing.
We tried the transition at 2 months and it was a total failure. But when he was ready, it was fine. So if you want to try it, you can always give it a night or two and put him back in the swing if it's clearly not time.
Anyway, we made the transition because he learned to roll over and started trying to roll in the swing, kind of successfully. I guess I could/should have strapped him into the swing, but I didn't.
I stopped swaddling while he was sleeping in the swing because I thought the closeness would make the transition easier. We went cold turkey about 3.5 months because he was fighting it so hard. We were lucky because it was easy. We also worked on drowsy but awake a little while he was in the swing -- advice from troublesome tots.
We followed the Troublesome Tots advice for weaning from the swing too, but I left him in the non-moving swing for probably a month before putting him in the crib. The transition itself was fine: he slept better in the swing but really was not terrible in the crib.
But hey, he took great naps!
