I love doing a small cake for the birthday child, and then cupcakes for everyone else to enjoy. I get my cute pictures and then don't have to worry about cutting cake = win win.

Cupcakes, not cake cutting and people are more apt to b take it to go if they leave early

At home birthday with plenty of seating =!cake.
Birthday out and about with lots of standing = cupcakes.

Always on team cake. Something about those soft edges, oozy frosting.

I am totally happy with either! But @AggieDaze: has a good point in that if people are standing around cupcakes are better.

CAKE!!! Blowing out a candle on the cupcake just doesn't have the same effect

It's easier for me to bake cupcakes than to bake a cake. Efficient to give out and doesn't require extra silverware.

Cupcakes for ease of feeding small children! We do it with a giant cupcake for the birthday girl and everyone is happy!
Cake at a smaller inside party seems like it would be fine but I haven't had one of those.

@AggieDaze: haha I love your logic.
I'm definitely doing cupcakes for the party. But trying to decide if I will bake her a small cake for the party or just let her blow it out on a cupcake. She will *definitely* be getting cake on her birthDAY!

I ALWAYS do both. I think cupcakes are just logistically easier all around. But I can't imagine not having a birthday cake. I make a small 4 inch cake for DD.
Cupcakes are easier to make in different flavors, and we make the cake whatever flavor I'm in the mood for since we'll end up eating it throughout the next few days.

@regberadaisy: i don't love cake
but i LOVE ice-cream cake, so i say cake. it's also easier to make and no 100 million cake wrappers to clean up

I like cupcakes, because they are easier to serve, and everyone gets the same thing (no worrying about slices being too big/small or someone wanting a corner vs. middle piece).

I like decorating cakes more (although it takes more time) but cupcakes are so much easier to pass out and to bring places. I like the idea of a little cake for the birthday kid and cupcakes for the rest.

We did Bennett's party yesterday and had both - I couldn't decide between Cookie Monster and Elmo so I didn't! I got my mom to make them, though. If I had to do it myself I'm not sure I would have been so ambitious.

Cupcakes can be prettier but cake tastes better. More inside (moist) to outside (overbaked) ratio! And a more sane frosting to cake ratio. I guess I have strong feelings about this, haha.

I find cupcakes easier to serve but way messier than eating cake with a utensil. I think we'll do mini cupcakes with minimal frosting for LOs 3rd birthday at a playplace.

I'm team both for anything. Kids birthday parties, I like cake. There's something neat about the presentation of a big cake compared to cupcakes. DS #1 likes cupcakes for occasional cake fun. For big events like birthdays and baptisms, the big cake is a hit with our crowd.

@erinbaderin: your mom is a rock star baker & decorator!

We did cupcakes and cake pops for DD's birthday and both were a huge hit.

Cupcakes, decorated as a cake! They're basically just a single layer of cupcakes, placed close together, and iced/decorated like a cake, so you get the presentation of the cake but the ease of serving of cupcakes.

Anybody else prone to getting frosting on your nose when you bite into a cupcake? Just me?
