Hmm... not sure how I feel about this. My kid isn't old enough for this to be an issue yet, but I'm not sure what the age limit should be for something like this. Definitely it seems like the beach supervisor overreacted, calling the police! But I do think at some point, it's probably not appropriate to strip your kid naked in public to hose them down. But what that age is... I have no idea.

I'm bumping this! I was recently at a birthday party for a 4-year-old that was held at a local beach. There were three little girls, ages 2-4, and at one point, they all wanted to go swimming, so their moms just stripped them down and changed them in front of the rest of the party-goers.
I'm kind of curious what people's opinions are for at what age should you stop doing something like this?

I think you need to stop once your kids don't like it. My son, for example, doesn't like to have his diaper changed in public. He is a private dude, at 2.5 years old.

while i would personally not be comfortable with my 3 or 4-year old naked in public, i wouldn't disapprove of the actions that you're talking about or the one mentioned in the article.
i once saw a grown man changing shorts on public tennis courts and lo and behold he was going commando. while it was kind of shocking, it was short and he wasn't doing it to be obscene. again, there's no way in hell i would do that but i wasn't offended by his actions. i think it depends on context as well as age.

@looch: yes, the child's feelings would definitely be a consideration as well.

@looch: Good point! I didn't even think of that, haha.
@edelweiss: Yeah, that's kind of how I felt. I don't think I would feel comfortable with my 3-4 year old getting naked in public, but I don't judge others. But I do think there would be an age where I WOULD judge - I'm just not sure what that age is! I think by 6-7, I don't want to see them naked. But I'm not sure about 5?? Maybe I'm crazy?

I have all these pictures of me in the nude on the beach when I was 1 years old. I think I'd cut off letting my kids be nude anywhere but in the house and maybe the backyard when they are 3. I also think there is a difference between changing a diaper/pants in public and letting your kids run around in the nude.

I get that maybe some people would be uncomfortable with seeing little kids nude, but calling the cops is WAY overboard. They're kids! Get over it.

Because I have lived in Europe a number if years, I think the police reaction is out of hand. In most European countries I have been to, kids run around naked on the beach, sometimes at the pool, and in city parks with water fountains and it is 100% ok. We go to a kiddie pool and there are little girls who are probably 5-6 years old wearing only bottoms, and it is perfectly acceptable. Public nudity for children is just not a big deal in many places in Europe.

Personally I think that 2 is ok.... but 4 isn't a toddler anymore. They're a preschooler. I think by then I'll be more private about changing my LO in public. That being said I've seen other people do it at that age at the beach and it hasn't bothered me.

I think 2 is still ok, but by 3 years, there should at least be bottoms on. I'm totally ok with little girls running topless until they aren't comfortable to do so, though.

I *love* me some Coco . . . BUT, how is *this* okay but not a naked two year-old . . . ? *scratcheshead* (these were pics from Miami)

@MsLipGloss: Yeah that's a good point. Some of the swimwear I see adult people (both sexes) wearing at the beach is extremely revealing, almost to the point they might as well be wearing nothing.
Sidenote... I never understood why it's not considered nudity until a woman's nipples are showing lol. I can see your WHOLE BREASTS. You're topless!

At our pool people change their toddlers all the time out in the open. I vote way over the top reaction.

this is crazy. i wouldn't bat an eye at a naked kiddo at the beach, especially for a rinse off!

This is ridiculous. It's pretty sad that the nude bodies of children have become so sexualized, that a parent can't give their kids a rinse off at the beach. The cops were called? Shame on our society.

This is why DE beaches are MUCH better than NJ beaches in my opinion.... heh.

Wow I just did this yesterday to clean P off before leaving the beach... glad noone called the cops on me b/c boy would they have heard a story they didn't want to hear!
I think 3-4 should be perfectly suitable for a child to run around nude & 5-6 with bottoms. They're children! Gah!

I think anyone with a two and four year old (like me, haha) could agree how insanely ridiculous this is. We were actually at a water park today. I changed both of my kids at our beach chairs from wet swimsuits to dry clothes and no one even cared. Plus the ladies room was out of order and the other restroom was clear on the other side of the park. What a waste of public resources to call the cops!

I wonder if he was the guy I saw! Lol. Saw a dude washing his son all nekkid... But didn't see anyone calling the cops lol. I agree with toddler ok, preschooler, nah for me, personally.

@T-Mom: I hate beach/public restrooms and would rather avoid taking my child into one if at all possible. I totally change my toddler on the beach. I do so discreetly but still...
