The Trikester is a tall skinny kid - although he's gaining weight, he's still under 7 lbs. We're using Little Snugglers diapers in the newborn size. He springs a leak or blows out the back at least once a day. I think he's too small to go up a size and our cloth diapers don't fit yet. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Our LO is the same, tall and skinny. She was in NB size for 6 weeks and had probably 2 poo blowouts a week! I just gave up :S
As far as pee, are you pointing his business down when you diaper him? My BFF had a problem with leaks until she caught on that it was pointing up inside his diaper.

Are you putting them on tight enough? I think sometimes people worry about putting diapers on too tight and they end up way too loose. Maybe you could get a cloth diaper cover though in the mean time? I don't know!

I would maybe try a different brand...they all fit differently. We've had really good luck with pampers swaddlers, and our LO is also tall and skinny.

I'd definitely try going up a size, even if the front/bum seems baggy at least you can cinch the waist and it can contain the massive blowouts/leaks? DS has always been skinny, but he's pretty long and always has been

Honestly, I'd try a different brand or just go up a size. Our hospital uses size 1 pampers for all the babies (unless they're preemies!), just overlaps the tapes if necessary.

I would say a different brand. But leaks up the back are just a side affect of disposables. Cloth has the elastic on the back that helps with this.

I tried a bunch of different brands with DS but is also tall and skinny and nothing worked. It finally got less frequent when he moved up to size 2 diapers and stopped completely at size 4. I think it's just something they have to grow out of.

Our LO is under 7lb also and tall and skinny.
We have had no poop blowouts, and the only pee issues were when I forgot to point his pee pee downwards.We have been using pampers swaddlers. They put him in size 1 at the hospital and we have been using newborn since we got home.

We used Pamper Swaddlers and never had a pee leak...just poop blowouts once in a while. Biggest thing we learned was to make sure all ruffles around his legs are out and the back of the diaper is very tight across his back.

I have two boys and Pampers have always worked well for us. I change my LO's diaper right befor every feeding; and when I notice he starts to have more blowouts I would go up a size. I also noticed that his blowouts were more frequent when his diaper is really full of pee. Now that we are on solids it's a lot better. No more blowouts.

The pampers swaddlers worked best for us. We had a lot of blowouts with the other brands. We still had blowouts every now and then with swaddlers, just not nearly as often.

We have blowouts when L is sitting on one of us. The poop can't gather in the bottom so it blows up the back. If she is lying down it is fine. We use pampers swaddlers too.

Put the cloth diaper shell over the sposie.

Maybe a small nb stash? We used prefolds & thirsties duo covers with P & never had any leak issues.... She was 6 lb 1 oz & 20 inches long so definitely no chunk here. With what you'd spend in sposies you may still end up saving a pretty penny?!

I would definitely try a different brand (we pretty much never had leaks with pampers swaddlers, but poop blowouts up the back are inevitable until they invent full-torso diapers) and go up a size if you still have leaks. Just overlap the tapes in front. Also make sure you're changing the diaper every couple of hours, even if there's only a little pee. If your LO has lots of wet diapers, this could be it-- a full diaper will always leak the next time LO goes pee or poop.

Another vote for pampers swaddlers. LO is also tall and skinny. We rarely had any pee or poo leaks when using pampers swaddlers but when we ran out and switched to huggies snugglers (which we got as a gift), he had a pee leak with every. single. diaper.

I found going up a size helped. We never had leaks, but blowouts would happen almost daily. They stopped around 3 1/2 - 4 months when we started a new anti-spit up formula that had some rice starch in it. She has the ocassional one now, but I think she's ready to go up a size again.

I have a tall skinny baby too- he took awhile to get his newborn chub on, so going up a size might create problems in that the legs will then be too big. I would get that diaper on as tight as possible... Definitely overlap the tapes and change often!

@Mrs. Tricycle: Personally I dont like huggies brand at all. I would try pampers swaddlers if I were you. My baby was tall and skinny too.

We mainly used cloth prefolds and covers, and had no problems with those, but we also used disposables here and there, and I found that Huggies ALWAYS leaked out the side, and we had almost zero problems with the Pampers Swaddlers.
I think brand can make a huge difference in the fit. -
Thanks everyone! I'll buy the Pampers Swaddlers next. We do point the boy bits down, but still get leaks. His thighs are really thin, so I'm not sure if a bigger size would be tight enough in the legs. I hadn't thought about putting a reusable cover over the disposable - that might be an option.

We are a strictly Pampers family after having problems with leaks/blow-outs/rash when trying Huggies with DD who was tall and skinny. One thing I found that worked was to put the diaper on a little "off-center" so that it was a tad below the belly button in front but provided a little more back coverage. For leaking it was usually an issue of not changing frequently enough.

Also try folding the back of the diaper down an inch so it creates a little "pocket". I've found with the liquids poos in the beginning, this flap saved me poopy laundry! Many times I'd change DD and found some poo trapped in this pocket. If he is consistently blowing out try upping a size. DD is a skinny Minnie and upping a size meant some serious tab overlapping but she is tall so she needed the extra depth. We used Pampers Swaddlers and loved them.

My LO was fat and leaked all the time in disposables. We switched to cloth.

Make sure it is tight enough, overlap the tabs if necessary. Change brands! We didn't have much luck with that brand either. However LO did, and still does have a lot of blowouts when she poo's...but never when she pees. We use Pampers and sometimes Target brand, as well as luvs and have no issues...

My skinny little girl is ready to go up a size when she starts blowing diapers out. Then they look hilariously big on her, but no more leaks. I'd give one a try and see if it helps, even if it seems too big.
