My daughter's daycare is starting their fundraising event which comes in the form of chocolate (ie. bar of chocolate = $3, sell as many as you can, etc.).
Do you take these to work and try to get your colleagues to buy? Do any of your colleagues do this? Do you find it annoying?
I want DH to take some to work but he thinks it's lame. He thinks we should just buy the entire box to contribute to the daycare and just give the chocolate away.
What say you?

Ummm I will pay a lot of money for daycare. I feel 0 need to "donate" anything to them, or encourage my friends/family/coworkers to do so.

Teachers leave their children's fundraisers on the main office counter all of the time. I especially love Girl Scout cookies and Boy Scout Christmas wreaths.

Unless there are some extenuating circumstances (ie. raising money for a charity and teaching the kids about giving back), my daycare gets plenty of $ from me.
@Rubies: I remember my parents doing this in elementary school but I haven't seen fundraising much in my workplace. I'd probably do what your DH is suggesting if I was compelled to participate. Although, I'd buy chocolate from you because right now that sounds delishhhh!

There are a couple guys at work that always seem to have one cause or another going. I was a little put off the last time because first he sent around an email asking for us to support her daughter. Then later, he circulated an email thanking the specific people that supported her.
Now we have a policy. It has to go through the office manager

My friends daycare did a trivia night to raise money and we went and it was fun! I would rather do that than buy candy. They also had daycare. Fundraising is kind of against work policy. You can set something out but you cannot ask people to buy

I would not participate at all, much less at work. Especially not for a daycare I spend as much on as my mortgage.

@JennyD: Fundraising happens twice a year to coincide with the summer holiday and winter holiday. The money raised gets put towards trips or special guests (ie. last summer daycare had a farm's petting zoo come for the day and the kids got to feed the animals and learn about them, etc.) and things like that.
@Mae: Yeah, we pay a lot of daycare, too, but we don't really mind giving a little extra because we LOOOOOOOOOVE her daycare. Without these special things, daycare is still great, so it's all good.

Can he set it out in a break room with a sign? That way people can buy but feel less obligated.

I don't think I would support something like this. If it was to support a scholarship fund or something sure. Or out daycare does fundraiser for march of dimes (just a coin collection contest per classroom).
I'm kinda with your husband that I would just donate directly to the school if you don't mind supporting and paying extra for these activities. (Usually the school gets more if you donate directly and leave the chocolate out).

@mrskc: Oh, oh, oh! I totally mean for him to just bring to work and send out an email that says something like "Anyone who is interested in buying chocolate for my kid's fundraiser, come by my office" - I totally don't want him to bombard people into buying.

My coworkers brought their kids school fundraising stuff to work and I bought something every time. I'm close to my coworkers so I don't mind contributing at all!

@Rubies: I dunno...I think I'd have a harder time just buying a "fundraiser" for a private pre-school.
As a teacher with an active co-curricular group that I advise, I am ALWAYS fundraising. Actually, thanks to @blackbird: I am thinking about doing trivia night for the benefit dinner we are planning in the fall 
Basically, I try to only sell things that people would normally buy (Christmas trees or half a hog cut and wrapped]) or experiences (event dinners). As a person, I might buy a ticket to a cool dinner, but a $3 chocolate bar, not so much.

@Rubies: I really like that your daycare does this for fun events for the kids. Our daycare does random fundraisers but doesn't tell us what the money goes to! We don't participate. But in your case, I would take to work. People like chocolate.

Daycare, no. Grade school, yes.
Coworkers bring fundraisers into work all the time. They're just left on the counter. No pressure. Personally I look forward to girl scout cookies time and caramel popcorn tubs time.

@Rubies: oh ok! I totally don't think it's a big deal to take to work. I would probably buy one from my coworker. If he's really not comfortable doing it, then just donate money to the school.

I've never seen a day care do fund raising. But we have a spot in our office that people typically put that kind of stuff with a note from the kid and an envelope kind of thing. No pressure, just left out.
I definitely wouldn't buy the bars yourself and give them away for free. Typically the profit is like twenty cents a bar. I'd much rather just donate to the day care directly if you didn't want to do the fund raising portion. This is how I typically participate in these fundraisers. Find out what the profit margin is for a case, and just donate that amount straight to the agency. Unless you really love $3.00 chocolate bars...

If you donate, can you deduct it from your taxes? I'm guessing you can't if you buy the box of candy. Plus as Sapphiresun said, the portion that the daycare keeps is probably small.
