Is there anything that you do on a daily/weekly basis to maintain your dog's dental care? Or have you considered dental cleaning through the vet?

We give our dogs Greenies to freshen up their breath every couple days or so. The groomer brushes their teeth every few weeks, and once a year, we take them to the vet for a deep cleaning.

@MungBean: How often do you take your dog to the vet for a deep cleaning? I'm not sure if our dog is due for one soon.

@serendipity: Hmm, I think once a year? We try to do it regularly, especially for our older Yorkie because she has horrendous breath

Just bones and Dentastix. We haven't noticed a problem with her breath and her checkups have all been fine. My dad's dog, on the other hand... it smells like she ate a butt. And he does nothing.

@ladyfingers: LOL!! that is how I describe my dog..his breath smells like a dog butt.
my dog has stinky breath no matter what we do. HOWEVER!!! I dropped $20 on a "moose antler" at petsmart and his breath as not stunk since!!

We try and brush his teeth once a week (the vet tells us we should do it every day?!?) and once a month I have it done at the groomer and somehow they are able to do a better job than us. I think he likes the toothpaste we use too much and he just clenches his jaw and sucks it off lol. He never has bad breath but I don't want them to get bad because I don't want him to be sedated at the vet for a cleaning.

I brush her teeth occasionally, but she's more interested in licking the toothpaste. Last time she saw the vet he said that if we're good with brushing her teeth we might be able to avoid having to get a cleaning done...though I'm afraid I haven't been that meticulous.

We brush their teeth about once a week with the finger brush and poultry toothpaste. It gets the grime off but I'm not too keen on the "poultry" smell. Wish they made something minty!

@oahujeni: haha we use the peanut butter flavor - it's not as potent as poultry

@sorrycharlie: thanks, I can definitely handle peanut butter much better than chicken breath!

I try to brush my dogs' teeth every so often, i used to do it every other day and i've been seriously slacking lately. My older dog will go for a professional cleaning sometime in the next couple months. My little one, Lucy, will go for one maybe in a year?

We give him raw hides to chew on to help break down the tar and build up in his back teeth. When we take him into Petsmart for grooming, we'll ocassionally have them brush his teeth also. He's not a fan of it when we do it for him.

we try to brush our dog's teeth regularly but it isn't too regular (oops!) and occasionally give him rawhide or greenies to chew. he's had his teeth cleaned at the vet once before (he's 4) and the vet just told us he needs another cleaning in about 6 months. it's not his breath that's bad, it's the tartar build up

It's only been a month now, but I've been using Vetri-Science Perio-Support on the suggestion of my vet. It's a powder that's added to their food (I do about half the recommended dosage though, because they're small and don't eat that much. Basically, I do enough to cover the kibble). Too early to really tell if it's working yet, but I do think their breath has improved, which is probably a good sign.

I can't brush their teeth (my one will literally shake her head back and forth violently). That one has already been in for one teeth cleaning, which involves being put under anesthesia. She'll probably need it again (it's been about a year), but afterwards I'm hoping the perio can manage it going forward.
I was told at our last appointment that my Sheltie's teeth were looking pretty bad, and potentially the back molar needs to be pulled (poor girlie). I have an appointment for her in October.
Chewing on things (natural bones, denta bones) doesn't seem to eliminate the tartar on any of them.

@autumnlove: I'm actually out of them now, too! The dogs' breath is getting unbearable

@StrawberryBee: I have a sheltie, too! my vet said she thinks his breath is stinkier in comparison to my mom's border collie because his mouth is so much narrower = more crammed room for bacteria to breed. gross! if you have a petsmart near you, try buying one of the elk/deer/moose antler things. they're pricey ($20 ish) but my sheltie always inhales rawhide and throws it up later. the antler just kind of turns into shavings which is a PITA to clean, but he never got sick on it! he LOVED it. and just that one bone made his breath delish.

Our dog actually lets DH scrape her teeth. It's kind of funny, ESP bc she doesn't like to have her teeth brushed.

I brushed my cats teeth with one of those wisp toothbrushes last night. Funniest thing is that she liked it.

@sorrycharlie: thanks! We've actually tried antlers before, but my spitz likes them more than the Sheltie and tends to claim them all ;). They really like marrow bones...I should really start using then again.
And because I can't resist, here's a pic of my Sheltie from two weeks ago when she became an agility champion :D. Seems mean to reward that with dental surgery!
