So now the LO is born, we're signing up for health & vision insurance for him immediately. However, my job does healthcare enrollment in May, and any changes made then take affect July 1. Do you think I could wait on selecting/paying for dental coverage until then? He will have JUST turned 5 months. Is there any need to have dental insurance before then, really? Am I not thinking of something, as a FTM?

Definitely not worth the expense. We'll start dental insurance when he's 3, which is when my dentist says to bring him in.

We didn't start dental insurance until my oldest was two, though our dentist suggests bringing them in at one.

My son just went to the dentist today -- we have no dental insurance for him. He is covered 100% for cleanings under our health insurance coverage. According to the dentist, this is very common and the norm.

We didn't start dental until this year, and she is 2.5. Just had our first dental visit this week. Even if we had brought her last year, one basic cleaning was actually cheaper than paying for her dental insurance all year. (But that's because the dentist has a new patient deal).
Now I suppose it could have backfired if she fell and chipped a tooth or something? But that was a small risk we were willing to take.

My MIL is a dental hygienist and checks his teeth but she said we should take him in around 3. We still don't have dental insurance for him at 2 but will get it next year- he turns 3 in December.

Nope, I think they say to take them in now as soon as they get teeth.

My DD never got her first tooth until 8 months! And our health insurance covers preventative care, so even though we don't have dental insurance for DD, we don't pay out of pocket for cleanings. Honestly, even if she chipped a tooth, the cost of dental insurance premiums plus deductible/co-insurance make it unlikely that the insurance would be worth it. We'll probably wait at least another year or two before adding her, unless her dentist recommends otherwise.

my two kids didn't sprout teeth til about 7 months. i don't see any reason why they'd need to be covered before that. we didn't put them on our dental ins until they were 1-1.5 yo. Our medical ins has some dental coverage as well.

The pediatric dentist we chose is suggesting we bring LO in now since he has 2 (almost 3) teeth and he is 7 months. Even so, there isn't much they do, its just to get him used to going in. But most pediatric dentists I have spoken with say to come in at a year. So I don't think you need to worry about dental insurance until after 6 months!

We haven't needed it so far. BUT, I would check with your health insurance because I felt pretty sure that pediatric oral health is now covered under your regular health insurance (a result of obamacare). We got automatic coverage for DS through our insurance agency.

Nope. It's more expensive for us to have dental on her than it is to pay out of pocket. So, we just pay out of pocket for visits. And we didn't take her until 3.

@LBee: I had not heard that before, interesting! Our pediatric dentist isn't part of our dental network. I might have to see if they will take our medical insurance.

We did not take LO into the dentist until a year and half. The first few infant visits were mostly about parent education (bottle feeding before bed, brushing technique, sugary foods). I don't think LO got used to going at all. Her visit at 2.5 was the first one in the big chair and she was thrilled.
