Dexter season finale (SPOILERS)

Thoughts?

This whole season, while better by far than last season (I told my friend who's a couple behind to skip last season and just watch the last 5 minutes), was kind of meh. But I like the turns they've made Dexter and Deb take.

My initial thought: Well I guess using your personal police weapon to kill the chief of police sort of renders your brother's original plan moot. Did they have to chop up LaGuerta and feed her to the fishes?

What's in store for next season? I think that the sudden disappearance of LaGuerta is going to lead to Dexter's ultimate downfall. Everybody knows she was after him, and as bad as she looked, I don't think they're going to forget that when she drops off the face of the planet.

Yeah, I think that Deb shooting LaGuerta totally screwed Dexter. I'm dying to find out what they did with her body and how they plan to cover this up. I told Hubs that this is going to put the spotlight right on Dexter, especially once they discover that not only is LaGuerta gone but so is Hector Estrada? And does this mean Deb's gonna be a killer now, too?!

I really liked this season, but I didn't like the past 2 or 3 so maybe I'm just impressed because it is definitely an improvement.

At first I thought they were going to call it in and act like LaGuerta was caught in the act of killing the guy who killed Dexter's mother, to frame Dexter and Deb ended up killing her. The last scene was pretty epic though, of them walking back into the party. I can't imagine how they will clean that up - would it work to just shoot her again with the guy's weapon? Probably not. I know next season is the last season, so there has to be some kind of resolution, but I can't imagine it'll be as simple as Dex getting arrested.

@ladyfingers: I could have SWORE they were going to kill off Deb this season for the sole reason that Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter got divorced at the end of 2011. So I'm kind of glad they didn't, as crazy as Deb is, I like her.

I really hope next season is like crazy non-stop cliff hanger action like I though the season with John Lithgow was. That was BY FAR my fav season. I mean, it's the last season of Dexter, they have to make it worthwhile, right?

@JerricaBenton: I would think that ballistics would definitely show there were two bullets from two different guns. And would lead straight back to Debra. Even if they're relatively certain of what happened, don't they usually use forensics to confirm it, especially for something like this? I also don't think it will be a simple tidy ending, so I'm excited to see what happens!

@smocks: Yeah, I'm glad they didn't go that route either. That would have majorly bummed me out. The John Lighgow season was EPIC! I really hope next season knocks its socks off.

@littlebug: haha right?!

Oh another question - did you guys think it was weird they had that disclaimer at the beginning of the show, saying that in light of the Connecticut shootings, the content of this programming may be disturbing? I thought that was pretty out of place. It got me thinking that something was going to happen to Harrison the whole time, which really bummed me out.

Hubs thought it was weird, too. I guess because of blood splatter and stuff like that they didn't want to upset anyone. I was trying to think and I think this is the first mass shooting that took place during the season of Dexter - Aurora, CO was in the summer, before the show started airing again. I guess they just wanted people to be aware that it could be a trigger.

@smocks: I thought it was odd, yes. Everybody is so sensitive these days. If you're watching Dexter, you probably are already aware what it's about. And it's not about an elementary school shooting.

I just watched it last night!!! I've enjoyed this season. I can't wait to see where it goes from here. I was surprised Deb killed Laguerta, but when she got to the container I was wondering if that would happen. That really screwed up the cover up plan... They must have disposed of the bodies... I don't know what's going to happen next!!!!

@smocks: I saw the same thing before Homeland (well, I haven't watched Dexter yet) and it was weird. You understand why they do that, I guess, but there are no little kids on Homeland.

@ladyfingers: The whole season was set up so that LaGuerta was "on" to Dexter, though, so it shouldn't be a surprise that LaGuerta is dead. They'll probably set up next season claiming that LG was after Dexter, and Deb shot LG in defence (since Dexter doesn't carry a gun).

I completely agree that Trinity was the best season, though I did like last season too!

I kinda agree with @Mrs. Jump Rope. I think Deb will end up saying it was in self defense type of thing, and that LaGuerta was off her rocker.

How do you all feel about Dexter's dad and his old partner, whose name I can't remember (the older white guy that told LaGuerta to back off). I get the sneaking suspicion that he may know more about Dexter than he lets on, or perhaps Dexter's dad was also a killer. I mean, why else would he teach his son this "code"? I dunno, I just think there's something weird going on there. I also think a lot of Dexter's past is going to come up in the last season, so it would make sense in a way.

During this season, I also got the feeling that the show was going to end with Dexter dying, not being arrested. Based on some of the monologues he had with himself, and the realization that it's not just "his dark passenger" and it's part choice too...I feel like he might kill himself. I know that's totally out there, but it's just a guess.

Am I rambling? I love speculating about this show.
