So, diaper changing has gotten interesting since LO has been actively trying to crawl. The minute I get him on the changing table, he flips over and starts rocking. I have tried holding him down but that irritates him. Should I try distracting him with a toy? He's feet used to entertain him before but he's not interested in them right now. What do you guys do? I feel like changing a diaper is like trying to herd cats...

Oh yes - it started to get "fun" about that time because we could never get her to stay down. We had to give her anything we could to keep her distracted on her back. Tubes of diaper cream and a wipe usually did the trick.

What about a mirror mounted right there by the changing table? Or toys like little musical toys (like Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes) with lights to entertain him?

i give olive her toothbrush and she brushes her teeth!

@BabyBoecksMom: My LO is still entertained with a brightly patterned wash cloth that I leave hanging on the side so that she can *find* it and play with it (and I don't worry about her putting it in her mouth).

another trick that works is to pass a toy from your mouth to theirs back and forth (something long like a marker works). both kids found it hilarious!
but lately i just keep her toothbrush by her changing table since she loves brushing her teeth.

I still have this problem. Toys don't really distract her because she likes to wiggle and turn over more!

@Mrs. Bee: I'm sure that works great, but somehow, giving her the toothbrush on the changing table seems like brushing your teeth on the toilet-- ew!
But in reality-- whatever works, and obviously she isn't changing her own diaper!!

@littlek: We keep a few things around the changing table. The best thing is to be consistent. There was a mom at daycare that had to change her baby on his stomach (rather hard with a little boy) because she always let him flip over and she didn't want to hold him down on his back. At daycare they wouldn't let him flip to his belly but gave him a toy and he learned to lay on his back.

We give her something to play with. Tube of diaper rash cream, bottle of saline drops, wipe... We usually go through several items per change.

we have to keep doing different fun things to get her to stay still, its can be frustrating sometimes. if I give her the tv remote she does stay still for a few more minutes

we use toys or his paci. i've heard some people saything sing or blow air in the babies face to distract them/make them laugh.

We're totally going through this right now (DD is 6 months old)! We strap her in so that she doesn't fall and then try to distract her with tons of toys. I also taped up a bunch of interesting pictures & photos on the wall for her to look at.

I would try keeping a suppoly of "new" toys that are for diaper changes ony. They will be a little suprise and keep him entertained.

No advice. T flips and crawls during every change. Even if I am holding his legs. It's interesting for the poop changes. Sometimes he gets distracted enough if I sing or make weird faces. Toys don't distract him - he wants to flip and get at the clean diapers and wipes!

old cell phone worked for us. lots of buttons! a calculator too.

@winniebee: Seriously, I've renamed changing time the "alligator death roll." I grab a leg and he still gets turned around.

@littlek: For non-poop changes, I do it on the floor. It seems like he is less interested in flipping on the floor for some reason...not sure why?

M will keep distracted w/ books, lotion bottle, qtip box, and lately the nose bulb aspirator. It is soo annoying! Oh and blowing raspberries on her stomach have worked lately too.
