DS has had an ear infection since November 1 that just will NOT go away. We've tried 4 different antibiotics and within a few days of being off of them he once again has a pretty bad double ear infection. Today at his recheck was the same, so they gave him two shots of antibiotics and told us to come back tomorrow for more / see if they helped at all.
If your LO got the shots, did they clear things up? Or did you end up with tubes? Thinking we are headed that way...

We just went down this road. LO (13 months) got her first ear infection late October and got her tubes placed a week ago (12/21). She was on Amoxicillian, Cefdinir, Suprax, Zithromaycin. The only time her ears were "clear" was post Suprax. That lasted for about one week (and long enough to get her 12 month shots).
We saw the ENT on 12/17. She was four days into her five day Zithromaycin and double ear infection. She got two shots that afternoon and changed over to Suprax. When she got her tubes placed on 12/21, both ears were still infected.
We are only one week post surgery, so I can't proclaim the wonder of tubes yet, but honestly the surgery was way easier than I built it up to in my mind. And I think your LO is close in age to mine.

Both my little ones have had chronic ear infections. Off one round of antibiotics and then almost right onto another. by the time my older lo turned 1, it was like he turned a corner and I think has had maybe one or two since and he is now 3. I asked about DD getting tubes but for insurance they have to have 7 in a year...we are one away!

The Rocephin shot was effective for us. But we only used it as a last resort to get her ears clear enough for surgery to place her second set of tubes.

@MamaG: Thanks that has been pretty much our exact experience! He turns one in a week so very close in age to your daughter. I'm glad to hear the surgery wasn't so bad and I hope it helps her avoid future ear infections. DS is such a happy kid but as soon as he stops antibiotics he gets so miserable, so I'm hoping if we end up with tubes they'd make a difference for him.

@matador84: Oh wow I didn't even think to see what insurance would cover - I think technically he's had 5 or 6 so far but they sort of seem like one never ending one!

@HappyBaker: We didn't have any "insurance" issues. Our pediatrician said he typically refers to ENT at 5 or 6. We got referred at 3 because of the timing. And between #3 and our actual appt with the ENT she got her 4th infection.

@Truth Bombs: That's interesting. I know all doctors do things just a touch differently. We specifically asked about having surgery while infected. Our ENT told us that if she waited for kids who need tubes to get well, no one would ever get tubes. She just said we had to have clear lungs to get through anesthesia.

@HappyBaker: tubes changed our lives. After her first set she only had one very minor infection in the 18 months they were in. As soon as they fell out we went right back to ongoing very hard to cure infections. Got the second set in May of this year and haven't had an infection since.
@MamaG: our ENT is pretty firm on only doing tubes on a healthy kid. LO did still have fluid in here ears when we did the second surgery, but no infection. One of my friends' daughter got her 2nd set of tubes placed while her ears were infected and they have had a miserable time with recovery and ongoing infections behind the tubes.

Just wanted to update, we are getting tubes in two weeks! We ended up getting 3 days worth of antibiotic injections and then a new oral antibiotic and DS had clear ears...for approximately 4 days. He already has another infection, so we met the ENT yesterday and are getting the surgery in two weeks.
I'm hopeful that it helps him! When the ENT saw the list and # of times he's been on different antibiotics for ear infection she said he's pretty much the poster child for getting tubes, so that made it an easier decision (and the fact that he literally did not make it more than a week without getting another one!!)

We had it twice, and it was effective for a short time but the infections always came back. We ended up with tubes and it was no big deal at all. I wish we could have done it sooner.

@HappyBaker: We have not had to try this yet but I just wanted to wish your LO well. LO got his first ear infection recently, at 3 years old, and has had two more in a row. It's been so painful for him and I hope the shots help your LO quickly!

@HappyBaker: Hugs. Not going through this myself, but I do know someone who is. The child got "glue ear" which pretty much means fluid in there no matter what antibiotics they are on. They ended up getting tubes for the child, and hopefully it will be helpful in finally clearing the ear infections that just won't go away. Super simple procedure, and the dr was out in 3 min. with an update. At the procedure, the dr said that even though there currently was no bacteria (had just had several doses of the shot), there was still a ton of liquid in there, so it was the right call for tubes.

Shots are the worst but so effective for us. DD got tubes after having 8 ear infections in 6 months, all of which were treated with antibiotics shots.
Ugh good luck. Ear infections are tough.
