Did or How did you vaccinate your kids?

Fully & on schedule. One appointment was a month late, but that was because I forgot to make an appointment! OOPS.

With my first we vaccinated fully with adjusted schedule on 2 shots and for my 2nd, fully and completely on schedule.

@Cherrybee: @looch: we also get the booklet here with the vax sticker with lot numbers. I wonder if it is a Euro thing since we also got a similar book for DS when we were living in France.

@looch: @lamariniere: I got a little booklet for C in the US. No stickers, I don't think, but the nurse marks it with every vaccine. I forgot it for her 4 month visit and they updated it for me at the month.

We vaccinate on schedule. If she had big reactions to them being grouped, I would have talked to the ped about spreading them out, but we have never had any real issues other than sleeping a lot, which I don't mind one bit

@LovelyPlum: I share your concerns about Guardisal, mostly because it's so new-- but obviously, it won't be new by the time LO is old enough to receive it! I opted not to get it myself since I had been with DH for a few years already and we were planning to eventually get married-- I figured it was pretty pointless at that point. Assuming it's still recommended in 10 years, I'll probably have C get it but I'm glad I don't have to do it now.

We were slightly delayed. DS had pneumonia at 3 mos (while still in Korea), so he was too sick to receive shots. He later had a reaction to PCV shot after coming home to the US. We were caught back up (doing no more than 1-2 shots at any appt) by his 2 year old check up, though we opted to skip the flu shot. We will spread out the next few school shots (there are 4 more required by our state before age 6) and receive 1 every 6 months after he turns 4. We are spreading them out just in case he has another reaction.

We were/are on a delayed schedule due to the dTap shortage @anagram mentioned. Our ped said it was our best bet so that DS didn't have to get stuck a ton of times at one visit. He will be caught up at one year.

    Fully on schedule over here.

I think the every month sounds like a great alternative for parents who want to "gently" fully vaccinate and their child care (if any) allows that. If LO had an issue/reaction from shots at any appt, I would consider something slightly modified like that.

My mom vaccinated us as per the schedule and I plan on doing the same with our future LOs unless there are special circumstances of some kind.

We choose not to vaccinate for personal reasons after a lot of research, talking to medical professionals and doing some soul searching. We feel it's the right decision for our family. Both DH and I were fully vaccinated.

The people who are anti-vaccination seem so vocal, but they are so far from the majority. The majority who do vaccinate are so quiet about it, relatively speaking. Look at that graph!

We vaccinate fully and on schedule, however, if she shows a reaction, we will move to a delayed schedule. I will not be doing Gardisil unless she asks for it specifically, and will probably make sure she is vaccinated for meningitis prior to leaving for college, if she chooses to go.

Full vaccinated and as on schedule as possible. Our former ped's office royally messed up so we are still fixing that. LO will have to get a vaccine at her 9 month check up next week.

@avivoca: meningitis, YES! That stuff scares the crap out of me. Where I grew up, we had a string of several years where one high school student a YEAR died from meningitis in the local area. No, thanks.

@Foodnerd81: I agree, in 10 years, if it's still the thing to do, I'll do it. My concern stemmed more from the fact that it's new, short-acting, and then suddenly no longer recommended after age 25. The guidelines seemed a little too random for my comfort level. I understand generally what it is trying to accomplish, I'm just not sure that that particular vaccine is the way to go about it. But again, guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Fully but on a slightly delayed schedule. No more that 1 per visit. He is up to date now at almost 22 months but will be behind a few months again at 2. I hardly think of it as delayed but I suppose it is.

I did two different things with my children.

With DD, I vaccinated on a delayed schedule (we just went to a lot more appointments )because she was being watched at home for the first two years of her life by my MIL and we didn't have any travel plans, so that was within my level of comfort. She's fully up to date with all her vaccinations now.

With DS, we vaccinated according to the schedule because by then DD was already in school and was probably bringing home all sorts of germs. We also had a trip planned to Cancun when he was only 3 months so we wanted him covered as much as possible.

Fully and on schedule. Last year though she had to get MMR twice because there was a measles outbreak in NYC and as she was only 11 months old she got a shot then and had to get it again at 15 mos because the 11 mos shot didn't count.

Does anyone ever feel hesitant or question new vaccines? I don't have kids yet but I am generally nervous about new medicines. I think I would prefer that medicines injected into my body (or a baby's body) be around for a decade or so before I even try them. My mom took a morning sickness pill in the 70s that was prescribed by her doctor but it was horrible and my sister was born with various "issues." So many other kids were also born with wide range of birth defects. The pill was ultimately taken off the US market even though the FDA never deemed it to be unsafe. I'm definitely not against vaccines. But there are so many more being given to kids now than before and I know I will have to be doing a ton of research before I will know how I feel about each one.

@MrsMcD: Yes. I always worry about what the "new" things will be found to cause down the line. It's terrifying actually.

  34. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@MrsMcD: I guess for me it depends. I mentioned earlier that I was nervous about the Guardasil, but something like the chicken pox vaccine never worried me at all. And the specific strain of the flu shot changes every year, but I still get that. For me personally, I don't think a new drug being introduced is a bad thing (it's often not!). But you have to make decisions about what you're comfortable with.

@MrsMcD: I think there is a lot of merit in really paying attention to what goes into our bodies and why and weighing up risk and rewards.

M and future LOs will be fully vaccinated on schedule.

I was fully vaccinated but DH was not vaccinated as a child because of his parents' religious beliefs. He has received whatever vaccines are appropriate for him to have now as an adult.

we do a delayed schedule and skipped a couple entirely (hep B and polio).

  38. Mrs. Pen

    blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts

@Mrs. High Heels: similar to us. J was home with me the first year, and still is home with my brother as the nanny. We did a slightly delayed schedule and we skipped just a couple like rotavirus, and delayed hep b at birth

But if I have another one, we'll follow a schedule more closely because J will be in kindergarten most likely.

  39. Beyond2

    pear / 1517 posts

We delayed the Hep B, did the 2,4 and 6 month shots on schedule. We skipped chicken pox completely (I will be homeschooling so we don't have to worry about daycare/ school difficulties). We did MMR at 17 months and he'll get his remaining shots at his 2 year appointment, other than chicken pox obviously. We also choose not to do the flu vaccine. This isn't on schedule for the doctors office, but our doctor has been 100% supportive of our decisions.

Edited to add- if our son does not get chicken pox by age 12 we will vaccinate him for it at that time. He have friends who do not vaccinate though and they have had chicken pox parties twice in the last few years. If chicken pox comes around at a time when it would be appropriate for our kids to get them I would likely expose them (I felt DS was too young at the times I've known someone with it).

I have a friend who asks for vaccines without preservatives for her kids. She also checks each vile before the vaccination is given to ensure that the medicine isn't expired. I suppose there are all sorts of things that a person can do to feel more comfortable about the vaccines they do ultimately end up taking.

@LovelyPlum: Oh gees... I didn't even know there was a chicken pox vaccine! Everyone I know had chicken pox as a kid. When my neighbor got it, my mom took me out of school and had me stay with the neighbor so that I would get it too.
