My old boss offered it to me before I left on maternity leave. She said she had pumped more than she would ever need during her maternity leave (she had supply issues with her first, and so she pumped a ton with her second). If I had supply issues, I probably would have accepted it. I never needed it though.
It was awkward when she offered, but I appreciated it.

I would just use formula. I'm too untrusting of people and having experienced a LO with dietary issues it's just too big of a risk.

I'd happily use donor milk and I have offered my milk to a couple of close friends. In my experience the women who are donating milk are very careful and conscientious about hygiene, diet and storage etc.

I have often thought about freezing some of my own milk to feed to a future LO in case he or she required it.

@grizz: in non medical terms what's the risk of formula to babies in NICU?

@locavore_mama: @Foodnerd81: @grizz: necrotizing enterocolitis is when part of a baby's intestines gets super infected and can die, and then need to be removed via surgery. Preemie babies sometimes have intestines that aren't totally done being grown, and have trouble digesting, so formula can exacerbate/cause issues.

That said, DS2 managed to get it at 3 months old while on exclusive breastmilk. So who the heck knows. His presentation was extremely rare.

@locavore_mama: @Foodnerd81: Necrotizing enterocolitis is a gastrointestinal disease. Because formula is more difficult to digest than BM, it is more common in formula fed infants, but especially more common in premature babies fed formula because their intestines are weaker to begin with. @grizz: please correct me if I am wrong!

I did! My sister donated her milk to my daughter when she was in the nicu. I was pumping, but they wanted her to have more than I was making. It was really, really amazing.

Absolutely. I would choose donor milk over formula.

Oh yes I absolutely would! I haven't had the need, thankfully.

I would choose donor milk over formula, but of course only from a trusted source (close friend/family member or milk bank certified).

I told my husband shortly after I had DD that if something happened to me, he was to call our birth center and ask them to get us some safe donor milk for her. I knew they would do everything they could to help.

I think it's kind of odd when people say they wouldn't use donor milk from a human but they have no problem feeding their kids milk from cows. I don't understand why it would be any different, provided both kinds of milk are pasteurized (as most donor milk is).

Both of our boys used donor breast milk when they were in the NICU, and I was very thankful for it. It was from a bank, though, so I felt pretty safe using it.

If it were from say my sister, yes, otherwise no. I would donate and have donated to a friend though.

I probably will use formula just b/c it's less hassle, unless someone offered and I can trust them! I def would not go around asking haha. I don't know if it's most costly to buy certified donor milk; if it is then I'd just use formula probably.
