Has anyone done it? Do you have it extra deep by digging into the lawn or just placed the container over the lawn (with the sand poured over the lawn)?
What do you recommend?

I haven't done it but my lawn part is kind of rocky so I'd put the container on top. I might try it this summer.

@SugarplumsMom: Eric made both of ours. The one we have now is over concrete, so we just framed off with wood where we needed to and then filled with sand. The one that was over our lawn, he dug down a little bit (maybe 6 inches or so?) and then put down landscaping fabric to cut down on weeds, and then lowered a frame into the space. He painted it white, and if we ever did that again we would just use wood treated for outdoor use but not paint it because the sand abrades the paint and it started to look a little ratty pretty fast. It was really nice and functional, though. That one was about 6'x6' and was a really nice size for playing in.
