It's only happened to me once... and I appreciated the warning. In retrospect, my friend was probably right - but it ended up being a moot point, because the relationship didn't last long.
Did you ever date anyone and then have your friends tell you, "you can do better.."?

No one has ever said it to me to my face but as soon as we broke up everyone and their dog told me, "I didn't want to say it but thank God!" Meh.
My friend married someone who I felt "eh" about (he's nice enough...But just meh to me) and when they got engaged, we had a heart-to-heart and I just asked her if this man was really who she loved and wanted to be with and she said yes so I left it at that.

@mrbee: Oh, but I just thought of another situation. I point-blank told my one friend not to get married to her fiance (not because he was meh, but because SHE was giving off the vibe that she wasn't so into him but because they were already engaged she didn't feel like she could back out). After 2.5 years of marriage, she left him and they are now divorced. Sad.

Yes. My ex I was with for 2 years. I was in so deep and just in a terrible cycle. He was emotionally and physically abusive. He even held a gun to my head several times but I couldn't ever leave. I had everyone telling me I could do so much better but I never believed it.

When she left her husband (who we are still friends with), she cut ties with us. I'm so sad about it.

Yep, my ex before DH. I was with him on/off for four years. (WHAT A WASTE OF TIME) Love is blind?.... thank goodness I saw the light and realized I deserved better.

Yes, I've said it to my best friend. It took him a while, but he finally listened. And he said it to me, too. In fact, lots of people told me about my ex (who, like @mrsjyw, I spent 4 years of my life pathetically dating/waiting for/pining over). Finally he treated me JUST terribly enough that I got fed up and walked away. 3 months later, I met Hubs.

Absolutely. It took me a while to see it though cause I was so in love with the guy even after he dumped me with no warning after being together for 2 years.

Kind of. DH was actually told that about me from one of his friends He was actaully told that DH "Wouldn't be able to do any better than me" so it was a blow to both of us.....
I ended up hearing it when DH was fighting with his "friend" about it. Needless to say, they aren't in contact any more

I had male cousins that were either being protective or racist! Looking back now, I can see why they'd be protective. They were in HS when that happened and didn't articulate themselves well, so I forgive them!

Yup... mostly my parents. My mother was very vocal about not liking a certain boyfriend... some friends I could tell were struggling with not knowing how to talk to me about it. After we broke up they were all like THANK GOD. We all knew he wasn't good enough for you. Kinda made me a little mad, but looking back I am soooo glad I didn't end up with him. My husband is a 10000000000000000000x (x infinity) better
