I'm 38W2D and being scheduled for an induction by 39W. Got checked today my cervix is nice & shut tight. OB said I have to prepare for a long induction if nothing changes since I'm starting from zero. Just want to see how other people's inductions went starting from scratch too!

Yes at 39 weeks. 2 days of cervical ripening and had some contractions the second night but had no dilation but some effacement. The contractions petered out so they started Pitocin late on the third morning and DS was born about 7 hours later. They broke my water at something ridiculous like 2 cm so I was expecting a c section with all those interventions and a baby that clearly was comfortable staying inside but it never got anywhere near even thinking about one.

@snowjewelz: I did. I was 39 weeks. My induction failed and actually got sent home 3 days later because my hbp was well controlled on bedrest. I went into labor naturally that night. They never broke my water or anything so I think that is why they were comfortable sending me home when I requested to stop the induction. I think it was unecessary for me.

@yellowbird: Oh man, stay at the hospital for 3 days just to be sent home, THEN just to have labor start naturally! I don't think I'd be sent home since gestational diabetes is the reason I'm getting induced

I was induced at 38wks3days and was not dilated at all. I had two rounds of cervidil and then pitocin. Even at the highest level of pitocin I only dilated to 3cm and ended up with a c-section after 40+hours. I've known many people who have started the same as me and have gone on to have successful inductions. Everyone just responds differently and I think my body just wasn't ready

I was induced, but due to cephalopelvic disproportion it never went anywhere. So, my experience may not be yours! But I started on Tuesday had cervidil, pitocin, a Cook catheter, finally got an epidural late afternoon/early evening the next day, and threw in the towel for a c-section at midnight on Thursday. There was zero pressure from my OB. All my decision, so I felt very comfortable with how the whole process went down.

I would not recommend it. They did the works: cervidil, pitocin, catheter, broke my water, kept making me turn, and move in weird positions all while having minute long contractions a minute apart. Not cool. I never dilated more than a 4 or 5 or whatever they needed to get the catheter back out.

Yes, I was induced at 37weeks, 0% effaced and 0cm, baby was very high. It was a long induction, it was 36 hours before I made any progress (wasn't dilating at all even though my water broke on its own) and then it went quickly. Got to 10cm right around the 48hour mark. 2 hours of pushing and he just wasnt budging. So I ended up with a c section (also because I had a fever and my water had been broken for over 24 hours).

@snowjewelz: I had 4 rounds total of misoprostol, which i guess is similar to cervidil. I took it orally and then was on the monitors for 2 hours, checked a couple other times and allowed to go home for a couple hours before returning for another dose.
ETA: good luck. I know it's scary to get induced when baby is not ready but it is not always an automatic c section. Hoping for a quick and "easy" induction for you!

I was about 1cm dilated when I went in for my induction (due to GD also). I had a foley catheter placed in the evening, around 7, and then by 2am had started having continuous contractions. At 6am they removed the foley catheter and i was about 2-3 cm and after that they started pitocin. I labored all day and never got past 4cm so at 10pm the OB and midwife recommended a c-section. They had put an internal monitor on my uterus and it was showing very strong contractions, so I should have been dilating and wasn't. Turns out DS was pretty stuck in there, they were bouncing on my chest trying to get him out during the c-section. He was born at 10:32, after about 20.5 hours of labor.
Sometimes I wish I could've had less interventions and more opportunity to get him more engaged (I couldn't due to constantly losing his heart rate). But then I think that well, he was stuck, maybe he was never coming out on his own and it would've ended in a c-section no matter what. But I'm glad they called it when they did. There was no point in continuing to labor and I was exhausted by then. I would have been very upset to labor for days and days and have the same outcome.

@ShootingStar: Yeah, I think that's what's hard to tell... You don't want to call it TOO early if there's a chance the baby can come out still, but if you needed it no matter what, you won't really know that till after the fact!! I'm def worried that she is so comfy in there and forcing her to come out due to GD will just result in days of labor and then possibly c-section.

I was induced at 39 and 2 and I think I was only at a 1. I started Cervadil on a Sun night, started Pit on Monday morning (12 hrs of cervadil), and I did not have my daughter until 6am on Tues morning. My OB practice was basically of the thought process that no one gets a C section unless there's a dangerous situation, so even though we had a scare at one point where my daughter's heart rate was dropping with the strong Pit contractions, I still had a super easy 5 push delivery. They ended up turning down the Pit and she stopped having a bad reaction to it. And I also had a fabulous epidural and ended up sleeping most of the time. So even though it was long, it wasn't a hard labor and it was a super easy delivery.

@snowjewelz: umm yes. Haha. I went in on Sunday night and didn't have the c section until 8pm Tuesday night. Then because of the fever he was in the NICU for 2 days and because of the c section I stayed for 3 days. So we were in the hosptial Sunday night to Friday night. It was a long week! But everyone was OK so I can't complain too much.

Induced Monday at 7am with Pitocin, delivered at 1:36 and 1:38am Tuesday. Epidural around 2pm or so. Not super long, but it could have been shorter, considering my mom had me in 2 hours, and had my sister in 45 minutes. I was really hoping I would be like her

Just here to say that even with dilation/effacing, it could still take a while. I was induced at 41 weeks. I'm pretty sure I was already in the first stage of labor when they induced me. I was 1-2cm and 50+% effaced. 16 hours later, I was 2-3cm and had barely progressed. I got an epidural (so I could sleep), and then they broke my water. I finally delivered a full 24 hours after my first dose of Pit.

@snowjewelz: 3cm - haha:) They kind of pressured me into getting it....I had only just started to get mildly uncomfortable, enough to be irritated easily because of the pain during a contraction. They kept telling me that if I was going to get one, to just go ahead and get it as soon as I got uncomfortable. I had thought it would "run out" if I got it too soon, and they assured me that wouldn't happen, so I should go ahead and get it. Basically they looked at it like, if you're going to get one, there's no reason to hold out. I had such a comfortable labor and got so much sleep, that I will be getting it asap with LO2 this spring as well:) My parents said they had never seen a delivery where the person in labor slept the whole time while the family waited and got no sleep. I guess because the body is working SO HARD, it exhausts you, but you can't feel the work going on? I mean, I was wiped out and had no issues with sleeping my butt off. They actually woke me up to check me because they were pretty sure I'd be ready to push and sure enough I was at 10, and my husband was like, "Can you stay awake to push?" Haha.

I was induced at 38+3 and I was clamped shut! I remained shut through one hormone pessary (36 hrs) and then dilated to 1.5cm over the course of the next 24hrs (second pessary - achy contractions but nothing unbearable). They just about managed to break my water but I still didn't go into active labour so they popped me on syntocin and I had E 4 hours later ! That stuff WORKS!

I was induced at 41+1 and was only 1 cm dilated at my 41 week appointment. (I may have been a little effaced but not much.) I got a Foley catheter and pitocin, and only ever needed a really low dose of pitocin (I think the max was a 9 out of 30?). I had the Foley catheter in for about 3 hours and then OB broke my water not too long after. I got the epidural about an hour or two after she broke my water, and it didn't stall things at all. I did push for two hours, but start to finish the whole process took about 13 hours.

I was induced at 40 weeks with no dilation or effacement (is that the word?). Started with cervidil to ripen the cervix at midnight, they thought nothing much would happen but at 6am I was fully effaced and having contractions. I had to call and wake up Dh who'd gone home to sleep to hurry and get back to the hospital! Ds was born at 11am. I was lucky my body responded so well to the cervidil, I hope the same goes for you!

Yes, I didn't have any signs of labor at 41 weeks. The first round of cervidil for my induction did nothing so I got another dose of it!

I was induced at 40+6. Had a foley ( I am never sure how to spell that ) induction at 10 am, went home and laboured for about 14 hours until active labour hit. Then went in and was given pitocin to help keep things moving. Had her at 3:57 pm that day. Honestly for me it was a great experience.

This was me! I was induced at 37.5 weeks due to low fluid and LO was high and my cervix was totally shut. It was a long process (about 36 hours) but rent really well in the end! 12 hrs cervidil, then 12 on pit with no epi including a balloon catheter. I was only like 4 cN at that point and really feeling the pit contractions so I got the epi. Then I took an amaaaazig nap and finished dilating in just about 5 hours. Then I inly pushed for like 20 mins!

I was induced @ 39w6d and was barely 1 cm dialated to start. My induction was similar to @princessbaby except I didn't sleep much - even with the epidural! I came in late Tuesday/early Wednesday (my "appt" was for midnight), got the cervadil at 3am, pitocin at 11am and my water broke on its own a few hours later. I was finally ready to push around 4am Thursday and DD made her debut at 4:49! Long but not as long as some and all went pretty well!

I opted against an induction at my doctor's recommendation (there were some additional complications during my pregnancy that made it a little riskier to labor) and had a c-section. I know you don't want a c-section, but I just wanted to chime in and say that worst case scenario, you have a c-section, the recovery might not be as bad as you fear! I was up and walking within maybe 12 hours?

For all intents and purposes, yes. I had a "high leak" in my amniotic fluid so was admitted to the hospital at 40 weeks 1 day to deliver, but was less than 1 CM dilated and 50% effaced so they had to 'augment' my labor. I hate to tell you this, but I had a 30-hour labor, that ended in an emergent C-section. I never dilated past a 4. However, we're pretty sure this was because my son's head was too big to fit down the birth canal, so the labor stalled. I'm sure you'll have a better experience! And in the chance that you do end up with a c-section, I'm two weeks out, and really feeling like myself again. I know many people fear the c-section recovery, but I haven't found it to be too terrible. Anyway, best wishes on a successful induction, and a healthy mama and baby!

@Applesandbananas: True! I do know people on both sides that recover well and not well from c-section. I think I'm just so terrified of birth already and even more terrified of actual surgery! I think I just don't want to have to labor for days and THEN they tell me I need a c-section, since I know that happens!

@ShootingStar: It sounds like our labor stories are incredibly similar. My son's HR kept dropping due to strong contractions and an inability to fit down the birth canal, and I also stalled at a 4! They had the internal monitor in me, too, and every person kept saying, "With how strong your contractions are and how close together they are at this point, I'm SURE you've made progress!" and...I hadn't. So frustrating! It makes me feel a bit better to hear someone else had the same experience I did.

@snowjewelz: it was CRAPPY! I was in the hospital for 6 days when I finally got to come home for good. I did request to be sent home though because I really wanted to avoid c section from medical intervention. I wish I would've been more I formed before induction.
With gd I doubt being sent home would be an option. I wish you the best of luck!! I hope it's quick and easy for you

@snowjewelz: I did, and it ended in a c-section, but I have some caveats that make me a poor test case. (1) I was only 36 weeks, but the boys had to be born then. (2) My lowest baby was breach and therefore wasn't putting any pressure on my cervix during the induction.
My cervix was a little bit effaced, but that was all. I was on pitocin for 12 hours and I didn't dilate at all, not even a centimeter. I think my caveats make me not something to worry about, though!

Yup, for the same reason (GD). The end result was a c-section due to heart rate issues with C. I had zero regrets about ending up with a c-section. Ultimately, the OB felt I probably would have ended up with a c-section regardless as her head seemed to be stuck in my pelvis. She was slightly cone headed, which wasn't expected for where I was in labor.

I was induced at 42 weeks at just barely 1cm dilated. Had cervidil overnight, misoprostyl in the morning and started pitocon at noon. I was in labor by 3 and she was born after 30 minutes of pushing just before 9. My midwife was prepping to turn the pitocin off and wait for the next day because she just did not think I would progress that fast.

I was induced on my due date after an ultrasound revealed low fluid levels. I was less than 1cm and not effaced at all. The very short version of a very complicated story starts with three rounds of cervidil over 36 hours, which eventually got me to 3cm and 90% effaced.. Finally, we started pitocin, which did nothing for hours. The docs decided to stop it for the evening and gave me a morphine shot to help me sleep. An hour later, my water broke and I progressed to 10cm and 100% effaced within a couple of hours. Baby girl arrived almost exactly 48 hours after my induction started via uncomplicated vaginal delivery.

@snowjewelz: Well it's been almost 3 months and we haven't received any kind of a bill yet. I don't think we have to come out of picket at all - my husband has incredible insurance. The only thing we did have to pay for was a private room (NYC is wack like that - you have to share a recovery room unless you want to pay for a private room. We were on a wait list and finally got one on the last night. It was the best news ever, when they told us I actually said "praise Jesus" Haha. I had to share a room with another c section mom. My guy was in the NICU so instead of taking some advantage and getting good sleep, she had her baby in tbe room with us and breastfeeding wasn't going well so he screamed ALL. DAY. AND. NIGHT. I was losing my mind. The mom was super sweet and felt awful but it was torture. But, I digress.
As far as packing more- I wouldn't bother. I brought some comfy clothes and toiletries and I am not exaggerating when I say that I spent the first 4 days in the same hospital gown. I used their mesh undies (amazing) and their pads. The only toiletry I used was my toothbrush. FINALLY on the last night when we had a private room I took a shower. FOUR DAYS without a shower. After childbirth. The shower was heavenly.
But seriously, you won't use 90% of what you pack. So I would still keep it light. I can wall you my experience of packing necessities if you'd like
