I went to a regular public school through high school. When I hit 9th grade, all the smart kids left for the magnet school... it really decimated our high school. I think magnet schools sound great on paper, but they can also have a really negative impact on the public schools they draw from.

Public, but I went to one of the best public schools in the state (of course we lived in a state that scored really low on education so that's not really saying much!)

l went to public school and then went to private for high school. I really appreciated my education. I did see quite a difference in the kids that continued on in public education vs. the private education. We are currently discussing how to handle our children going forward.

I went to public school through 5th grade and then moved to private school. In the town I grew up in the elementary schools and high school were great but the middle school was crap. My parents pretty much "forced" us to go to private school for middle school. But then they gave us total choice for high school. I decided to stay in private and my brother decided to go back to the public school system. We went to equally prestigious colleges and have both had successful careers. I truly believe one can get a great education in either setting (provided the public school system is decent).

I went to public through high school. My middle school and high school were magnet programs. I took most of my high school classes in bungalows at the zoo.

All private. We are hoping to send our girls to public for 1st through 5th.

Public. Both of my parents work as part of the public school system so wasn't going to get out of that one. My husband went to only private schools so it's been interesting to see the pros and cons from each side.

@mrbee: I agree about the magnet schools! They are great for the kids who get in, but because they have skimmed the cream of the crop, there are no positive role models left in the neighborhood schools. I student taught at a selective enrollment high school.

Public for elementary school and then private for high school as our neighborhood public high school wasn't very good. I would much rather have gone public for HS but the option available just wasn't going to cut it.

@Mrs. J: I also found that our local magnet schools produced a lot of graduates who had trouble talking to people across a broad range of intelligence, talent and socioeconomic background.
The magnet programs I've seen tend to optimize for one thing (intellectual education) over a lot of other softer skills that I think are important too.

@Mrs. J: That would have been so nice! We had more than that in my class and at graduation, as they were reading out everyone's name, I realized just how many people I had never even heard of - and that was after four years in school together!
@Mrs. Jacks: wow, an old historical school would have been cool! I think ours was pretty old, but the actual school building was only 50 or so years old, so no cool history there.

@mrbee: the magnet I attended was the zoo magnet. It had a home school and we got bused out to the Los Angeles zoo to take most of our classes. It was not based on intellect there was a wide range in our magnet. The school just gave extra electives that were science related. I took animal husbandry, marine invertebrates, animal behavior as electives. There was a set up of about 12 bungalows off to the side of the parking lot where our classes were held.

Public. Private school wasn't really a "thing" where I grew up, it was a very isolated and elite occurrence. Although my parents did debate sending me to a Catholic high school, but ultimately decided against it because they didn't have a music program (which I was already involved in in middle school).

@Mrs. J: pretty much the same here... For Kinder I went to a Christian private school. But afterwards, Catholic private school from 1st grade to college and even grad school. I also went to an all-girls HS... I loved it actually!
