In the UK, they have just started vaccinating pregnant women against whooping cough because we have had a spate of newborn babies contracting the illness, a number of whom have died. The idea is that the antibodies will pass from the mother to the baby and protect the child, as a baby cannot be vaccinated until he/she is 3 months old.
Lots of women are refusing to have the vaccine as it has never been given to pregnant woman before - and they are concerned that it might cause problems for the baby. I'm leaning towards having the vaccine because I don't want to risk by baby getting whooping cough.
I've read that they have been vaccinating women in the US for a few years. Did you get the vaccine?
I had a bad reaction to it as an infant, so they didn't want to give it to me while I was pregnant. I made sure DH got it though, and LO will get it, but I definitely will keep an eye on her when she does because of my history.
