My boss told me that they rented them - and until you handed it back in you didn't get your diploma!
I graduated in 1993 and had to buy mine!

For college we rented them. I'm pretty sure the credit card on file just got charged a purchase price if you didn't return it.
For high school the girls wore white dresses and the guys wore khakis and blue blazers so we had to buy our clothes for graduation.

I think my parents paid for them.
We had a "dress code" for graduation, too. My high school was public. Girls had to wear white dresses to go under their white gowns. Guys had to wear khaki pants and white shirts. I think the guys wore black gowns.

Rent them?! We bought ours & had to wear white dresses underneath. This was the late 90's.

No dress code/robes at my hs. If I remember right, my college gave us our grad robes. I just found out that for my phd program, it costs almost $900 to buy the whole outfit!

I think in high school we purchased everything, and I wore a white dress (public school).
College we rented. @Nana87: I didn't purchase my robes for my PhD for that reason! But if you're going into academia, I guess you just have to suck it up.

Yes, in highschool, but I don't remember for college. In either event, they were the flimsy material that would practically combust!

No, they were provided by the school. They were dusty old things that the school reused every year lol.

How do you guys remember?! I have no clue for both HS & college!

I wish they provided them, but no, we had to buy them. They were expensive, especially DH's master's robes!

We had to pay a rental fee, but it was something minimal like $30. We kept the hat/tassel.

we had to buy ours for high school and for college and grad school it was rented and it was a pretty steep price of $65.
They didn't know if you returned it or not.

IIRC, we didn't have them for high school. For university they were rented.

I can't remember about HS- but I still have mine, so they were either given to us, or bought. I'm sure we had to pay. That was 2006. In college I had to buy mine. I bought my undergrad in 2010, and in 2013 for my masters, I just borrowed my BIL's since it was just a plain black robe, and my DH's hat from HS since his was black, and I bought a tassel and sash.

@snowjewelz: I remember b/c my nephews and nieces put on our high school robes for dress up, and I remember the stress of having to return our robes on college graduation day by a certain time or else!
