Please say no! We are flying on sunday and do not have a birth certificate. It totally slipped my mind. I do have her SS card.

We flew with her when she was 3 months old and no one asked to see anything. Not even her SS card.

We have flown three time (she is 2 now) and brought it every time but were never asked to show it. Fingers crossed you will be fine!

They told me to bring it when we flew a couple weeks ago. Never asked for it.never even a mention!

I don't know why they would need the SS card. We have always kept a photocopy of the birth certificate with us when flying, but have never been asked for it. I asked airline personnel if we would need it and she said the only reason you might need it would be if they questioned the age, since they can only ride in laps under age 2 and we never bought a seat for DS.

We flew with her at 5 months and no one mentioned it. I made DH go and get a copy in person a few days before we left because I was super paranoid, too!
I have heard they usually only ask about it if your LO looks close to 2 and they are flying for free.

They asked for it when I checked in at the Southwest counter. Hopefully they won't ask you! Sounds like it's not a definite.

Yes, we needed a way to prove that he was who we said he is, and that he was our child.
pomegranate / 3393 posts
No, we had it, but none of the 5 domestic flights he's been on have asked.
eggplant / 11824 posts
Of the 15+ flights we've taken, they asked for it once. Two airlines have told me at booking that if we don't have it they don't have to honor the lap infant booking (I think if they thought she was over age 2 and we were trying to extend the free period). Oddly, the only time they asked to see it was when she was 8 months and clearly a baby eligible for lap seating.

We've been on three domestic flights and they've all asked to see the birth certificate.

As long as we had some kind of documentation that had his bday and name, we were good! We had sent off his birth certificate with his passport application but we going on a trip in between and we were freaking out! Call the airlines and see what they will accept.

we've never been asked (always on Delta). I think Southwest has a policy to always ask.

We've never been asked for it, we have flown with her many times. I never bring it but I always bring her passport. The only times we've showed that were when we were actually flying int'l.

Southwest always asks for a lap infant. We've brought her check up records from her doctor as proof before. It has to have her DOB on it.

The one time they asked was at the Southwest counter the last time we flew. Of course that was the one time that I forgot to bring it. It was in a drawer at home -- 1 hour drive from the airport. Luckily they decided to be nice and let us fly without it.

We flew on Southwest and they did ask. You can get the short form printed right away in person at your local birth certificate center (not exactly sure what it's called). Ours is located in the same building as the county tax office. The short form will suffice for domestic travel and school enrollment. The long form is required to obtain a U.S. Passport.

Never, but we always traveled with his passport, even domestically.

Nope, we've been on 8 international flights and never been asked. Even though my husband has a different surname and passport from DS and I.
I always bring a birth certificate though, just in case.

Nope. I brought it, but they never asked. Even on the international flights.

@DillonLion: yes. Every single time we went through security. We've gone through security with her at least 8 times.
If you don't have it, they may make you buy a seat...

How do you not have a birth certificate? You mean you don't have a copy?
We've always used a passport, even domestically.

I have never been asked but I was told when flying as a lap child they may request it - to prove the child is under 2

southwest always checks... other airlines don't. Last time the southwest guy told me we could use a pic on our phones though.

We brought a photocopy but we were never asked for it on United.

We did not get asked but LO was 7 mos. I think they start to ask once they get older because they want to make sure they are under two.

We flew with DD at 15 and 18m and didn't have to show it either time. However we took it just in case. Not sure what state you are in but you should be able to get a a copy pretty quickly. I'm in Ohio and we can get them by going to any county's records department, they print it while you wait.

@looch: we never ordered a copy from the state after she was born.

@purrpletulips: the only option in person is at the state capitol, which is three hours away.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@DillonLion: can you see if you can get a copy from your city hall? I was able to get a copy of mine through the same office that issues marriage certs.

We were asked all six times she flew on Southwest. We were not asked on United. I think your chances of needing it are less if she has a seat. If she's flying as a lap child, I'd definitely find and being a copy. Honestly, I'd try and find one anyway. Even if the airlines don't need it, I'd want proof she was my kid if we ended up in a hospital or something while traveling. Her social security card doesn't help because it proves neither age nor parenthood.

@DillonLion: I'm in Harris County and we can go to the bureau of vital statistics and get one same day. Are you sure your county doesn't offer the same?
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@lawbee11: DH is working from home today so im sending him to the county clerks office to go get it.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
I've flown with AA and Virgin and neither have asked.
Southwest asked when I flew with them the first time with DS and got him a infant boarding pass (they're required for Southwest, so weird!), but he's in their system now so no need for future travels.
