Originally, yes. We were going to have our wedding photographer do maternity pictures and newborn pictures.
However, we're about to hire a doula and part of her services include a small selection of newborn pictures in the hospital, and her work is very good, so we are going to just use those as our newborn pictures.
But, either way, having professional pictures of our LO in her tiniest state was important to me to have as a memento.

We were gifted a photographer. It was crazy expensive and I'm not sure if we would have done it if it wasn't a gift. I love the pictures and they are priceless, she'll never be that teeny tiny again. But honestly we couldn't have afforded it ourselves, we had just moved and had a baby!

Yes, and we will definitely get newborn pics of our next LO as well.

No, we didn't. DH gave me the choice between getting a really nice DSLR camera (I had a shitty point and shoot before) or getting newborn photos done. I opted for the camera.

I voted other because the photographer I had wasn't "professional" per se; she is a student pursuing a professional photography career but her work is very professional and she is well beyond her years. She has more talent than many senior photographers. We got a good deal because up to that point she'd only done families, weddings and seniors but never had the opportunity to do newborns so she only asked us to pay cost of supplies since we were giving her experience. We were lucky because then she got three other newborn sessions this summe and now she charges several hundred for the session
I'm sooo happy did them.

Yes, it was a must have for me. I am super excited about our newborn photos--LO will only be a newborn once!

@Coco Bee: same!
I voted other because the girl that is doing it is actually just a student and she was the intern of our wedding photographer. So, she has experience with weddings and what not....and she is dirt cheap:) She has the whole professional kit and camera already too.
I like her because she will just give us the photos and we can print them as many times as we want and in any size and we won't have to choose with poses we do/don't want.
If you know anyone really good with photos and editing and owns a great camera, then maybe that'd work!

@TurtleDoves: yeah it's great finding an "up and coming" photographer
However I would be wary of anyone without infant experience because they can be squirmy, poopy, needy, hard to pose etc, we didn't get half the shots we'd planned because of him just doing his own thing lol I'm so glad she was patient

No, I didn't, and I regret it every time I see all the cute NB pics!

I didn't, and I don't regret it. It's way too expensive where we live (like, $500+). Not worth it. IMO.

Nope, no regrets. I don't plan on doing it for DD #2 either.

we LOVED our newborn photos and they took some shots that I could never have done on my own:

I voted other, but technically yes. Our hospital had a professional photographer that comes to your hospital room if you opt for it, and they bring props, and turned out really cute! We had planned to have a newborn shoot when dd was like 10 days old but cancelled it due to the cute hospital photos!

We had someone who does photography as a side job/ hobby. Best way to go! Its affordable, I got the CD with print rights and She did a great job. DH and I do a little photography as a hobby, but it was nice to have someone come in to take pictures and edit them.... while we were trying to figure out our new life with a baby.

Yes! This was a must have for me. Even though I am a decent photographer, I knew that a) photographing a newborn is nothing like photographing adults b) I don't own any cute props c) it was *really* important for me to have some photos of our LO with me and DH as well.
