If you had newborn photos done, how much did you spend and where are you located? I'm having a really tough time finding a package for less than $2k that includes the digital files, and I don't know if that's normal. I can't believe 2 hours of time and work on ~40 pics can cost the same as a wedding photographer, who is there all day and takes hundreds of photos!!!

ummm 2k is A LOT for a newborn session. I would say that $400 is average, but expect to pay more if you want a CD with digital files and full copyrights.
I kinda got a good deal because I used an up-and-coming photographer and I guess she had never shot newborns before so she essentially did the shoot for free, just charge me for supplies. Her style isn't typically what I would go with but for the price I didn't care. She has a lot of talent for her age and experience level.
I'm in Minnesota, and for a portrait session I would expect to pay around $400.

Our hospital did a newborn photo shoot for each baby born there for free! The only catch was... if you wanted to purchase any photos you had to pay up. We ended up purchasing the full CD with all of the photos and full copyrights for about $200.

We bought a package, it was $625 for a maternity and a newborn session. 90 minutes for each, and digital rites to 10 edited images, and all the proofs. We are in Alberta, Canada.

I'm in the Seattle area and a lot of newborn photographers charged about that much if you wanted all of the digital files. I was on google like crazy trying to find someone who took amazing photos and had reasonable prices. I found an awesome photographer that did the shoot at your house and brought all the baby hair bows and hats (bc that adds up too!). I think I paid $175 for a newbon and maternity session fee and $500-600 (can't remember exactly) for all of the digital images (both the maternity and newborn photos)...her package also came with 30 birth announcements...she also gave us a small framed photo as a thank you gift which I thought was so nice.

That sounds right (also in the Seattle area). My favorite photographer does a 4 hour session for $200 + $200 print minimum and $1500 for digital files...so expensive but I'm sure they're worth it! I couldn't justify spending that much so we'll get family photos done when she is still an infant but more playful.

Holy shitballs! That's redonkulous! I paid $400 total for a package for my newborn shoot and my maternity shoot. I think it would have been $500 if I had not booked/paid for them together. A CD would have been $200 but I decided against the CD because I was SOOOOO excited about our wedding CD and it has been stuck in my MacBook for like 8 months, and we have had no sense of urgency in getting it out. Or looking at it. So that kind of made me think that I'll just order all the prints I want like I did for my wedding and I probably don't need the CD.

Whoa! That's way more than I would have expected! Maybe it's normal, but that seems like wedding photographer $$ but less time. Maybe they need more helpers on a newborn shoot to pose/prop, I have no idea. Now I kinda wanna ask our wedding photographer how much she charges for maternity/newborn shoots

Wow! I don't know how much mine were, they were a gift from my sister. But I know she wouldn't spend that much on us! We had them taken at our house. The package included 3 pictures, and then if we wanted to purchase more it was $40 a picture so it was quite pricey, but luckily between the 3 free pictures, DH's parents and mine, we didn't have tp spend any money.

That is ALOT in my opinion. We are using our wedding photographer. She is still "new" to the business so her rates are awesome and she does amazing work. We are paying $75 for a 1 hour session and full rights to all the edited pictures.

whoa, that seems like a lot to me! Our newborn session was $275 and our photographer spent about 2 hours snapping pics and we got the digital file with about 40 shots. As a point of perspective on price, our wedding photographer did the newborn shots, and our wedding photography was $2500, so in her case, she obviously charges much less for newborn shots.

That's actually more than I paid for my wedding and engagement photographers. We didn't do a newborn session with DD but will probably do a family session after LO#2 arrives since DD hasn't had professional pics in a while. However we'll go to a place that offers a free session and you can pick from multiple packages; I think when we last got our pics they cost us under $100 and we go the full CD. I'm in Ohio if that makes a difference although the place we go to has shops all over the country (I think).

holy crap! I'm in RI, and we're paying $150 for a newborn session, including rights and disc with photos (we get 25 edited photos on the disc).

$2k sounds like A LOT!!! We got a baby & belly package that included 2 photoshoots, all digital images and either 75 birth announcements or an 11x14 canvas for $775.

2k? No way!!! I think 500$ would be on the high end. We didn't pay for ours cuz she's a friend but I think she charges about 200$ (but she's not doing it full time, more of a hobby)

WOW! that IS a lot. I am a full time wedding photographer - I don't do the fancy babies in buckets newborn photos. I take a more lifestyle approach when I do them. I can tell you that I charge the same as I would for any portrait session which is $300 for the session (up to 2 hours) a DVD of 50+ photos, online gallery, and print release. The amount of money spent on product is up to you. I know people that do exclusively newborns charge more since it's their bread and butter, but 2K seems over the top!

That was how much it would have been for us with some photographers if we wanted all the digital files. We ended up finding someone who will do a newborn and 6 month session, and give us 25-30 digital files from each, for $900. I found it really frustrating that no one would release a disc with the files though, or that they only included like 5 digital files.

we paid 150 dollars for her to come to our home, take pictures and for the cd of pictures. But here in small town USA there are a lot of people who do this as a side gig and don't charge an arm and a leg!

Holy cow! We paid $125 and that was with the disc and rights. We got 45 pictures back and he came out to our house. He was also our wedding photographer

I'm in TX. We did two newborn sessions - one at the hospital and then we hired a photographer. (We didn't know the hospital did the pictures). The ones from the hospital came out to be about $115 and the ones from the photographer were about $250, and both came with the digitals.
I did a ton of research for the photographers and the prices tended to be more outrageous for the better ones. I couldn't justify the cost though.

OH my, reading these and knowing what we get charged makes me thankful for being away from a big metro city! We will be spending $200 for everything, including right on CD.

Our session and digital files (about 25 pics) was less than $200. She snapped pics for over 2 house, had all the props, she is amazing!

For our photographer $2k gets us 4 or 5 photosessions with digital images for all of them. (Newborn, 3 months, 6 months, cake smash, and one year I think...) She is also the photographer that shot our wedding. We are in Dallas...but our photographer is in Houston.
