Interpretation
In concert Dan Wilson has confirmed that the song was written in anticipation of fatherhood but that he disguised it because he knew his bandmates would get sick of playing a song about his kids.
Jacob Slichter has also indicated that the song was written by Wilson "in anticipation of fatherhood", and that it is about "being sent forth from the womb as if by a bouncer clearing out a bar".
The repeated phrase "every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end" is attributed to the Roman philosopher Seneca the Younger.
-------------------------------------
The video is pretty good... because he talks about his kids in the beginning setting up the song... and then he sings the song line by line and explains each line.

That was freakin' awesome and could not be more timely. I will not be listening to Closing Time until this kiddo exits the "room."

Aww, I didn't know that. We used it as the last song of the night at our wedding.

Haha - you know you're still a little hormonal at one week postpartum when this makes you ugly-cry. So sweet!
